My 2 Haitian cichlids..... Pics.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got the female at 2" at the 2006 ACA convention, the male as a 10" adult a little over a year later. The female is now @ 10" the male @ 12".

I believe haits are special cases when it comes to cichlids, they have evolved on an island where no other cichlids were present, presenting aggression problems, and on an island where fresh water stays fairly warm, especially where the fry would grow up. They are a similar to Malagasy cichlids in their requirements, only more sensitive.

would this apply to the Cuban cichlids as well, being only 2 species?

These are my breeding pair with their latest fry, this winter I had a heater crap out over night, the temp dropped from 85 to 75 by morning, 49 of 50 fry from that spawn died. Here's the lone fry survivor
memorialday001.jpg

and like Darth said, think it's a female because of the blotch in the dorsal

Look at the bright side, if you get that one survivor to breed some day, maybe her offspring will be slightly more able to survive temperature changes.

Cubans you would think would follow the same, Ill jump in here as I have had success with Cubanos, and would not seem to think they are as bad (Difficult) as the haits are.
Haits (IMHO) are like H.Bartoni and seem to be effected by stress related bloat, from other fish, bad water, cold temps, and Bloat City, I have raised a brood of Cubans from Rob @ Keystone Aquatics (Cheap Pop!) and have never, never, lost 1 to anything but my own stupidity. The Dude (Duane) is someone who I call friend and is IMHO a authority on the raising and success with Haits, but even he will tell you, be prepared for losses....Dude, how many did you lose to get your 1 female??

He is Breeding My Cubano pair as we speak as he is a expert (again IMHO) in the raising of these guys....(and I don't have the space to allow for cultivation of fry).

I can't wait to get tank space ready to raise some more Cubanos and give my go at the Haits....Great Fish!

Maybe the dude will be able to sex some fellas for ya???

Nuthman~

I had about anywhere from 500 to 800 of them. Usually, the females turn jet-black when they are in the prime condition or pissed off even when small.

Sean, from the pictures, it looks like that you have a female and a male but they are still too small to be sure.

Good stuff man - you should head by and pick up that galaxy pleco from me - I'll throw in the L260 for free, and you can see how fast my geo's are growing :P
