So your intakes for the fx-5's are in the sump before the prefilter, (to keep it from getting clogged so fast)??? I'm pretty sure I know how yours works now but if you could throw up a pic of the sump that would be cool.
You gave me a good idea now I'll give you one.I also run many fx-5's and have had my strainers seperated many times, by my larger fish. I also have lost some very nice fish, because they got sucked up. What I did was: Drill four holes in the strainer two on the top part and two on the bottom part.(one on each side). Then stick zipties through the holes so they cant come apart again. Problem solved. The only down fall is if you dont trim the zipties off just right they can leave a jagged edge that will sometimes scratch your fish if they rub or bump into it. Hope this helps you from any future losses.
