I may reduce the amount in the future, but I don't like tannins yellowing the water and this is what it takes to keep it nice and clear and nitrate-free. I didn't mention there is also a 135 with a P. niger and a TSN on the same system.
I am on my own well, so it is only pennies a day worth of electricity.

Sweet. You are living proof that tanks are like head lice.
It was really noisy at 1200 GPH, noisy at around 1000 GPH, and pretty quiet at 700 GPH.
I ended up switching from my Iwaki pump to a Quiet One 4000HH, it definitely is a lot quieter at the lower flow rate.
I also built some boxes lined with sound-deadening board to put around the plumbing under the tank.
I plumbed the new pump to just one of the returns. I plumbed the other return and a DIY intake for a canister. I plan on using an Ocean Clear 317 canister (mechanical) and a 1200-1600 GPH pump.
It was built out of White Oak by a local cabinet shop to match the rest of the cabinets in the house. There are slide-outs and adjustable shelves in all the cabinets, top and bottom. It was a bit over $2000 finished and installed. It wasn't cheap, but the wife loves the storage, so it was worth every penny.
This picture is with the crown moulding and end-panel installed.
