My 220 Gallon filtration headache !!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will be getting an fx6 in the near future, I just didn't want to spend $350 on one atm due to other projects am putting my time into. Also I only open my eheim 2262 once every 6 months. If it's fairly clean I leave it up to a year. Reason why I went with 2 x sunsun its not only because ive seen the results others get with them and they do have fairly same design as the marineland 360 I have on my 55 gallon, I had that canister for 4 years and opened it maybe 5-6 times. Never had a problem with it, no leaks , does a nice job keeping tank clean and design makes it a 10 minute clean job when I do maintenance to it. Hoping I get same luck with these 2 x SunSun's ^^
If you're only opening these canisters once or twice of times a year it may explain why your tank isn't as clear as you would like. Filter pad(s) gets clogged and flow is impeded......result is poor mechanical filtration.....result poor water clarity.

My actual problem is I didn't have any to little mechanical filtration. My eheim 2262 its 99.9% packed with massive bio filtration : Ceramic Rings/Biohome/Eheim Substrate Pro/Seachem Matrix/Chemi Pure Elite. On that order from bottom up. Has nothing to do with how often I open it.

Still doesn't change anything. I can't imagine a filter pad not needing at least a good rinsing after a month or 2.

I've been opening my sunsuns every 4-6 weeks on my planted tank. I usually rotate the pair so I do one every 3 weeks or so to prevent a bio crash.

It must be the fact that it's a planted tank, but those things fill up fast for me. Both are rated for like 75gal each and i have 2 on a 40b. The sunsuns are probably the easiest canister to clean and prime that I've ever owned. I've got poly pad and floss in a sandwich in the bottom tray, the second tray has a fine filter sponge with bags of biomax. The rest are just full of media bags with substrat or biomax. I really like the new ac110 biomax that comes in presewn mesh bags. And its fairly inexpensive.

It probably takes 10 minutes to disconnect it, carry it to the bathrub, rinse it out, and replace the floss. I clean the impeller, lube the quick connects and main oring (with silicone grease) every other cleaning.

So far I'm beyond satisfied.

I have to open my FX-6 about every 3 weeks, but the limiting factor is the blue polishing pad I keep in the middle tray over my bio-pellets becoming clogged and the filter starting to lose flow-rate + I assume they turn into nitrate factories at some point as well... I keep ceramic beads in the top with the stock black foam filter on top of that and the bottom tray is full with purigen (sometimes I throw another polishing pad under the purigen to increase the contact time with the purigen.

Its the only thing running in my 90g FW loach tank (17 loaches from 1" - 8" + 3 plecos + 2 large jack dempsies + a few cories / tetras)

My water is crystal clear, but I can't imagine ever going longer than a month... I love the filter though, as filter changes are quick and easy and I just hose off the outer filters and ceramic beads with a garden hose and replace the polishing pads for the most part. The outer filter material lasts about 3-4 months before I replace them. Best advice I can give is to go on Amazon and pick up some bulk / generic filters that are way cheaper than the fluval branded stuff. I try to cycle out my filter material from top -> bottom for the outer filters so I don't lose too much bio-load capacity vs. replacing all the foam at once.

I have diy surface skimmer for polishing water, change floss every second day..need only powerhead so poo cant settle down..works quite well :) otherwise, HOBs are way to go for mech filter :)

In this forum, a few years back, I posted actual flow of a 2262 after one year of not cleaning, and freshly cleaned. If you're interested, use our search option to locate that data. I'm posting from my cell phone, otherwise I'd look out up real quick.
