I think I may setup a cherry shrimp tank now. Looks great.

Beautiful imagination you've got there, and to be able to make it happen, that's gotta be priceless! I was wondering about : the wire mesh that's tied to the egg-crate plastic thing, could that possibly leach anything from the galvanized coating that's usually on that type of wire? Also, wanted to know if you actually have to 'water' the top ground plants, or is their enough moisture in the atmosphere of your tank that watering them isn't necessary? *Have you tried for Tank of the Month yet? I'm pretty sure you would get it! ;)

Honestly, i think every fish keeper should have a go at keeping shrimp... its a different kind of rewarding and gives you an excuse to try a planted tank :)

Plus, lots of cool species to choose from to match any budget...

Thanks for the comment and the vote of confidence :D but i think there are plenty of other tanks here that would absolutely wipe my tank off planet... although from a personal standpoint, this was possibly one of my most rewarding projects i've done in a while :)

Okay, now on with answering some question, the wire mesh i got was recommended by a shop i know who claims to have been using it for years and says hes not had any problems using it, so i decided to trust him and have a go...

As of right now, i don't think its leeched anything out? but i guess ask me again in a few months and i'll let you know if anything has drastically changed?

Regarding watering, yes i do lightly mist my plants once in the morning before work and once again after work... the main reason i do this is mostly coz i don't want to dry the leaves out, the dirt itself stays pretty moist even with just a light misting... but with that being said, if i notice the soil is drier than usual, i will spray it till its pretty damp again...

Also, i should mention, since some of the roots have finally penetrated into the water, i'm sure that will help compensate any lack in moisture from the soil ;)

I second the frog motion!

Thanks for the recommendation, but atm probably going leave the land area alone and just grow plants till i upgrade to a large tank... at which point i may see if a chameleon will work :naughty:

I love it also, but for some friendly advice if you add natural driftwood and make some hills where the terrestrial plants are, and add moss of some sorts it would look really cool.

And may I recommend a Tiger Salamander. (Ambystoma tigrinum or Ambystoma mavortium)

I actually thought of using some driftwood before, but never considered adding moss to it, so thanks for the tip :) although now that the plants have taken over, i'd have to wait till i next trim the plants back a bit before i try this idea out... not to mention i'll also have to see if i can actually find some reasonably small / interesting pieces that would work...

Hmm....was just wondering how cool that might look with some kind of water spider? Is that even a possibility, or not so much?***Forget I even asked, my daughter said it would go after small fish and probably your shrimp too! Ooops!

^ Honestly, even if i could keep one, i doubt my g/f would have let me keep any kind of 8 legged creature inside our apartment :)
