my 34" silver aro

Wow that aro has gotten huge. Hard to believe it could obtain that much growth in that tank, you've must've done something right.

btw, quick question, why aren't there more 30"+ silvers around here? I see huge tanks capable of growing some bigger than mine, but always see them maxing out around 28"?

Seems typical for silvers to slow their grow around 24" mark, and then only grow 1-2" per year from there on out. I'm sure water quatilty, amount and quality of food and even tank space can effect growth. I also have a theory that it's how fast and big they growth within the first 18 months of their life. So maybe it's not really the 24" in size but has to do with age. If I remember correctly your aro seemed to have more rapid growth rate then typical which could account for it's current size.

With my two silvers, now both 30", they have been only growing about one inch per year since going into the 450g tankin August of 2009. After reaching 24" they grew 3" in about 2 years in a 180g tank. One silver is just over 6 years old and the other is estimated to be 7 years old this spring. Not sure also if not seeing alot of 30" plus aros has to do with just not seeing alot of 5 year old aros.

No matter what, looks that you've done a fine job raising yours.

nice fish!

I have a silver aro that also is currently in the same tank your 34" guy is in. Also, my guy is going to be 3 years old soon, and he is already 26". I am also in the process of planning on a indoor pond build for him. I would love to see him reach 35" or so. I feed him every 3 days. Lake smelt, tilapia slices, shrimp, chicken, etc. He eat's anything.

nice crispy, i think i remember you getting this one, but i could be confused. you've done a great job thus far.

makes me wonder how big my old large silver that was over 24" in 10 months right now. then it also makes me wonder about my current aros since they are getting up there in size (19"+ using my measured just shy of 18" florida gar for length ref.) and it has only been about 8 months or so.

a theory i have on their growth has a lot to do with moving of the fish from tank to tank. i have had to move several fish from tank to tank and this dirastically affected their total growth rate in the same time frame of other unmoved aros. take my 24" in 10 months aro, it was in a 20gal till about 5-6" then into the 180gal. lots of food and clean water, never changed tanks and it had a large growth rate. a few other aros were doing the flip flop due to aggression and they were only 12" in 10 months. now these aros i have right now were in the 120gal wide from 3" to 8" then the 180gal from 8" to current. fast growth rate for them as well with only one move and 2 aros have hit the floor(one died and the other i go in after a few seconds since it hit me in the chest before hitting the ground.) i think stress plays more of a role in there total growth then any other single source. they may seem to be doing well, but if they are more stressed for one reason or another then they may grow slower. this would include tankmates. i have had one aro still get quite large at a good pace, slower then my 24"+ aro, but faster then others that were moved a lot. i had that aro with a large clown knife the would breech causing the aro to jump. a test to this is my big cats. they are getting to the size my aros have become untrusting of them and will spaz if the hybrid goes up for pellets. time will tell if this will effect their growth any by comparison.

interesting theory sbuse. my aro went from a 55g to my 130g when he was still small. then I upgraded to the 190g and he has been there ever since. not much moving going on for him, but alot of growing. he's been in the 190 since he was about 18" a few years back.

You have a Monster! Great job raising him as he looks healthy.
