What kind of discus you looking to get? Do some research dark substrate can result in peppering

I did some research in regards to your question and I came across this website.
http://www.discusmadness.com/Videos.html

Its a discus breeder. If you look at the videos page and click on at least the first 2 vids, you will see some beautifully colored fish in tanks with black or very dark substrates. Not to say it cant happen (peppering), but I think my chances are somewhat better than 50% that they may not. I think it's a little hit or miss.
Just like there are some fish that immediately change color with water changes but eventually return to their normal bright self after an hour or so.

But don't let me tell you about it, check it out for yourself and let me know what you think.
Thanks for the good question.

So here is the latest update 5-10-11
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_g7s39jQq8

Picked up my first ever batch of Discus. I obviously removed the cichlids(3) and blood parrot fish(2) and brought them with me to join my tank at work. Very happy there.
So far I have: 2 Golden Diamond or Red Melon variety, 2 Checkerboard pigeon blood, and 1 Red Marlboro. All from Mark's Discus in Brooklyn. Thank you Mark.

I opened the bag in darkness and introduced small portions of my tank water into their bag as the seller advised over the course of 1 hour. Then finally let them swim freely into the new environment. Soon after I offered them some frozen blood worms, which they are accustomed to eating. They responded very well and today they seem just fine. They are not used to having a light directly above the tank. They were in a very large open space that used general room lighting, so 1 of the fish was a little shy until I turned the light off. Then he came out to join up with his brothers and sisters.
Overall, I think they will be just fine. 86 degrees and very clean water.

Looking forward to perhaps moving the angel fish to another tank and adding some other color Discus. Maybe in another week or so. We'll see how things go.

Very nice....

I say leave the angels in there....I have a 125 with 5 angels and 7 discus (among other things) and the discus/angels all school together most of the time. Just my opinon, but I like them together. Tank is looking good btw....

Thank you very much. I just don't want to crowd them. I want to give all the fish ample space to grow. Adding more discus without taking something out might be too much.

I also have a very nice piece of driftwood still waiting to get water logged before going into the tank. I may have to save it for another project though because I don't want to crowd the tank.
I may have to get some smaller pieces instead or break it/cut it into smaller pieces.
We'll see.

i blame that background :P. I think it looks awesome, but takes up too much of the tank....either way, love the work u have put in and think it will come out great regardless...

Hey I just realize you live in brooklyn...I'm in the bronx lol. I have the same tank as your's but saltwater. I didnt read all the pages...just up to 4 and everything is looking good. Have you checked out some local petsmarts? I purchased some very nice large natural looking gravel for my 50 gallon freshwater tank.

Also you set up looks awsome, wish I thought of a 3d background...in stead of spray painting the back of my tank blue :)

Btw any discus yet? I'm thinking of getting one or 2 in the future...

Last but not least, if thier are some cool lfs by you let me know. I like hitting lfs's around new york.
