Lol, I would be too, if I tried to keep that many tanks at one time. The fish might make better companions anyway. When my 1st husband left, he left me the cat, he always did say I liked her more than him. Most of the time, that was true. Going much better 2nd time around. I do love my fish, though. Can't wait to get my 75 back up and running. Just can't make up my mind what to put in it.
If my LFS had a decent selection of choices, that would be helpful. Only one has a good selection of cichlids and they are a bit expensive. But if you want to find anything besides oscars, convicts and dempseys, they are the only real choice. Sometimes large tradeins show up at a few stores. That's how I got my big Jag hybrid, but big fish are hard to find around here. I do like the forums because the people on here are the only ones who understand how I feel about my fish, I know they care about theirs too. Most people I work with, just think I'm a bit obsessed and nuts to think that the fish have a personality of any kind. We know that they do.
I got a few Grammodes at the 2012 ACA. I picked out 6 of the largest ones that looked like they had the best genes.
I've got a pair now and have essentially given the rest away. And I can attest to the super slow growth rate. My male that is growing the fastest of the bunch has went from 1.5" to about 3" in 3.5 months. He was in a 55 gallon with 60+ % water changes per week and only a pictus cat, clown loach, and female Grammodes. His growth rate is huge compared to the others I had in a 30 gallon. They only grew maybe .5" in the 3.5 months I had them. The female has gone from 1" to about 2.5" in 3.5 months in the 55 gallon.
As far as personality, the female is always out and about swimming. The male hides a lot. But when he comes out, he stomps around and displays a lot of dominance. He flares a lot and chases the clown loach away if it's on the wrong side of the tank.
I can't wait for them to get 9" or so. They definitely act like Dovii. And their big heads are awesome. I love my grammodes.
Also, I agree that the jag option is a no go in a 75 gallon tank. They just get too big. Plus, they're just too common. Do something unique
I think u need to be part of the grammodes keeper crew. There's really no other fish like a grammodes even tho they are compared to a dovii. But I think they are far better fish to keep than a dovii. In a 75 a pair will do great with a divider if needed do to the aggressive nature of the males. My female trys to fight with my other fish and she's kept in a seperate tank 2 feet away but she thinks she can still scare them. If I don't find her a mate by next summer ill probly buy a batch of growouts from gage and rapps

I have books that I have had for years, I go through them and based on the big pictures in it, I kind of decide what I want from there. I have kept all kinds of cichlids over the years, but the dovii was the one I knew I could never have. I need to get another 75 soon. I have ideas for 2 tanks. The one I'll do first depends on which species I find first. One of the tanks is almost certain to be a grammode, maybe a pair. I have time to let them grow. I can be patient with them. It is worth it to see them as an adult, then everyone who sees it, wants one. Only another fishkeeper could understand the time and patience it takes to raise them to those beautiful adult colors.
Would they grow faster in a 75, or should I start them out in something like a 30 till they get a little size? The baby ones might feel lost in a 75. Would that much empty space stress them or will they do better growing up in a large tank?
Maybe a group to start out with in the 75, let them grow up together and see if someone pairs off. I'm sure I can find a LFS to take the extra ones as trade ins. Far as I know, no one around my area has any. Maybe as a group, they might like the large space and hopefully grow up to show their colors some.
