My 9 yr old son's tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well he gave me the okay ... says he's satisfied with the tank now and I'm allowed to take some pics. Instead of a rock, he picked out 3 different glass stones and we got an assortment of plants to try as well. Some went to the 30G, some to his 29G, and some ended up in my 55G .... plus he "traded/stole" a water onion from my 29G for a clipping of his wisteria.
He moved a couple plants (inches really ... more for growing space)

So here's the whole tank shot, like I'd said in a previous post ... I went CRAZY with the scissors. There's still some watersprite floating on the surface (new clippings)

He added this Bacopa ... as well as shifted the wysteria a little closer to the corner and planted a couple of its clippings nearby to it.

He added 2 little anubias to the driftwood here, a little lower and hopefully more shaded. Experiencing some algae growth on the 1st anubias thats just above them as well as on the sword to the left.

The view that greets you when you first enter the room (buckets in the background ... still need to do water change)
And his stones ... 3 glass stones, I wouldn't let him use rainbow gravel in this tank ... but he still managed to get color into it anyhow. The wateronion (from my 29G that he stole) he added in the corner and shifted the bacopa (the plant we were unsure about before) away from the watersprite

As well we did a little work on his 29G ... but just realized forgot to take the nerites out, so we could get his Assassin snail.
(BAD DADDY ... petspoiler would probably slap me right now if she could)
Here's a pic

We'd gotten a deal on a bunch of plants, some we had previously researched (we keep a note book on things we have and researched ... one for plants ... one for fish and inverts) ... I even made him read our notes (it states CO2 needed). But he still grabbed a couple Cabomba's and a few Ludwigia's (1 Cabomba and 2 Ludwigia's he told me to put in my 55G) and he kept 1 of each for his 29G which are now added. So we'll see. It's better him testing the theories/compatibility issues with plants than fish.
We had tossed a Sword he wanted in the vicinity he wanted it planted about 3 weeks ago (oops ... another mistake) went to go plant it and found it had already rooted into the gravel in behind the driftwood; he told me to just leave it there. His Wateronion had regrown its roots so he had me replant that where it was before we moved the Hornwort on the left side forward and chopped it back ... he wants to see if he can get his other Hornwort to spread across the top of the tank.
On a side note with his 29G ... we need to get some kind of sponge for the intake of his HOB filter. When I was helping him with his water change. We discovered 6 baby cherry shrimp and 1 of my rili reds in the base of the filter.

Looking good as always kidder keep up the good work :D

I'm pregnant with a little girl and I can only dream she shows interest in the hobby. I am in the process of setting up a 75 for her now. She will grow with the fish (stock is currently ALL slow-growers) and with a fire eel on the list, hopefully there will be a lot of interaction. I got my first fish at three years old and as soon as computers were readily available and my family had one (I was born in 94) all I did was research fish. I had a 35, a 10 and a 20 long but I yearned for more tanks and more freedom with them. My mother was extremely controlling and wouldn't let me put more than 3 fish in the 35, regardless of species. She killed my fish on a regular basis with 100% WCs and ended up taking away my API Master Liquid because "I was always convinced something was wrong with the tank". She took my computer away a lot, too, because "my fish forum people didn't know anything". It was extremely frustrating but the fish that managed to live really helped me through the years in that home. I am glad to see that you are encouraging his new found interest as I plan to do with my daughter. The tanks look amazing, please, send him my regards.

I'll pass it along ... thanks. You should see the growth in the past 2 weeks, becoming a little jungle in there.

I shall pass it along. By the way congrats on your bump (life changes with a kid ... but I wouldn't trade it for anything). Sounds like your first. Anyhow the thing I did when I found out I was to be a Dad ... started growing my hair long (have some clippings of his 1 yr. haircut with my 13" ponytail). But that was me.
This is our new passion together for at home.
All in all he's a pretty active kid, so I'm quite pleased to see his dedication myself. But it's something that was never forced on him. We kept the first tank cause he wanted it (5 yrs old) but so did I. It became my tank. In time he showed interest, and eventually got a tank from me. The only time he wavered taking care of the tank, all I did was tell him I'd gladly take it back and use it for myself. Since then he feels ashamed if he forgets something ... he truly cares for his fish and plants. And now he has his 29G and the 30G that we originally started with in the beginning.

Well that's it I give up, throw in the white flag ... finally admit defeat.
We've called a truce ... no more his and mine. Now it's all ours (although he maintains his 2 tanks and I maintain mine) but from now on all future projects we do together. He's sparked a bug in me with plants now, and his little jungle is part of it.
Never did get his Assassin Snail, but with my help adjusting his feeding ... the snails are more maintainable at the moment (they do have some benefits). So he's agreed to hold off on that for now.
Here's some pics at week 2 since my attempt at trimming plants.

His swords loves this corner, forever hiding in the plants. The java moss has really filled out the past week.

So far none of the plants have been uprooted by my banjo's

I thought I may have damaged his bacopa ... but it's coming back
Finally the tank shot

After seeing this and seeing how my 55G is coming along. I've now joined forces with him. (Too tired of being upstaged by a 9 yr old kid). He truly cares for his fishes (even though he only has the Swords, Guppies and 2 pleco's) and his plants. We want to make some changes in a couple more weeks on this tank. Removing all the watersprite and start exploring different kinds of plants.
