The day before yesterday my aro had been keeping his top fin clamped, and yesterday he started to keep both clamped and was resting on the bottom more than usual. I noticed one of his eyes was a little cloudy when I was changing some water. The water tests were perfect (zero across the board and pH 7.8, with known good test kit). Today when I came home I checked on him and now both eyes are cloudy and his fins don't look so good (they have a wilted look). I added salt but I am certain it isn't going to do it. Does any one know what might be ailing him, and what should I get to treat him? He has no outward other signs. His scales are all uniform color and there are no growths that are apparent.

I'm not really sure what is wrong but I had a problem with my silver a while back he was sitting at the bottom and his scales looked a bit ripped up like something was almost eating away at him. I dosed the tank with Meloafix and Pimafix together. The two of them take care of most of your bacterial and fungal infections when used together. After a couple days he was eating and acting fine. I hope that helps

Thanks! I am heading up to Petsmart right now. The place is staffed by newbies that don't own fish. I'd get better advice at the gas station then there.
Thanks again,
Ron

Yeah melafix should do the trick. The jar I took away had both eyes clouded up and I used just melafix for a few days, cranked the heat to 84F and added some salt and in 5 days his eyes cleared up but left one eye's pupil smaller than the other. :irked:

Good luck.

I think I have a bad bottle of Melafix or Pimafix. One of them keeps causing severe stress in the fish I treat. It has killed more fish than cured. I dosed the tank with both before I left to the lfs and when I got back his eyes were bugging out. I drained 2/3 of the tank and refilled using a double dose of stress coat. I bought some Triple Sulfa ($30) and put that in. His eyes returned to normal by the time I was done filling the tank. I treat my tap water in a five gallon water can and heft it to the tank so it took some time. His eyes are super red and are still fogged over. He can't see and I am worried that the pressure caused him to go blind. Hopefully it is just the foggy layer.

oh man that sucks

:WHOA: That's messed up. Did you use the full dose? I used half the recommended dosage on the first day, and diluted it first with tank water and over a course of 30 minutes poured in the mixture.

2nd day I used another half dosage (diluted first) and the 3rd day I used the full dosage.

That's why I'm so hesitant on using any medication on an aro even tho melafix and pimafix are from natural herbs and all...but still I like to be overly cautious.

The worst thing that can happen is that the aro can be slightly blinded, I know my jar is, but he swims and eats no problem...

Hopefully this won't be your aro's case.

Good luck and speedy recovery to your aro.

Hmmm....that really sucks....has he been eating live food? feeders in general?

yeah..how is it?
