The massive thread about algae scrubbers has been interesting, and I shared my first DIY build (pic below) there. That build looks like a sea monster's ass though, and sucks to clean, and isn't big enough, blah blah blah. Up next is an attempt to spend a bit more time, make a nice unit with powerful lighting, 2 screens with the lighting in the middle, self contained, quiet, and so on.

The only thing I really haven't figured a way around is how to contain the masses of hair algae that like to droop off the screen and clog everything. I don't think there's really much that can be done there though.

Anyways.... pics! Here is the old scrubber:

And, so far as I've gotten on the new build has been to try to piece together how I'm going to mount the lights... I only have 10" of vertical space, and I want to keep the unit thin. Wasting a bunch of space for conventional lamp mounting was not an option, and I wasted several days trying to make a nice holder for 4 T8 bulbs that was only 1.25" wide, and would still allow me to pop in and out the replacement bulbs. At the end of it I threw my hands up in the air and glued the end caps to some acrylic strips. I will have to do some minor disassembly to replace the bulbs, but it will work, and I shouldn't have to replace bulbs too often (!).

For lamps I just used standard 5000k 24" T8 Bulbs, in a sort of bastardized ODNO configuration, running off a 48" ballast.

More to come! slowly.

can't wait to see more. what size system are you going to run it on

I'm designing it for my 120gal system, but the screens are going to be like 26x10", so it should work on larger tanks as well. I may move it over to my 200 plywood, or just build another one if it works well enough. Next tank on the books is somewhere between 360 and 1000, so if this works well on my 120 it will get scaled up for that project.

By algae scrubber I thought you were talking about a stick with scrubber on it. Boy was I surprised. So what exactly are you making?

HAHAHA! I was thinking the same thing! What kind of amazing stick or scrubber wuz he making, LOL!

I don't mean to insult the project, and I do think these algea scrubbers are genius, but whith all the work your putting in (and lighting your putting in) why not grow some worthwhile plants. It seems like if plants would flourish, they would take nutrients away from the algea, keeping the tank clean and giving you nice plants to have or sell. Please tell me if I'm wrong, because I very well may be.:)

Well you have a good point, and my only answer would be space. This unit will fit in a 5"x30"x10" space above my 200 or under my 120. I have a fuge I could grow plants in under the 120, but right now it's homing feeders and some of my bio filter.

Keep us updated. I'd be interested in a compact scrubber that is easy to clean and is not an eyesore. Looking nice so far.

Just throwing it out their for what it may be worth. My algae scrubber used to drop chunks of algae back in the tank if it got too long and I have a pretty easy solution. I don't know if your pump came with one but mine came with a sponge block that fits over the pump that traps particles from being pumped back into the tank. I put that on and all the algae that falls off gets stuck in the sponge and continues to grow there instead. When I go to clean the algae scrubber I just rinse out the sponge too to get rid of the excess algae. So far its worked out great let me know what you think.

Also the big turd like thing is peat moss.
