My Baby California sturgeon (white sturgeon) is sick!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sturgeon never come to the top unless they need oxygen!

I see wild jumpers all the time. The actually jump out quite a bit. From what I know about CA sturgeon, never kept one.. only caught a dozen or so over 5'. Our waters are MUCH colder than that. Their native habitat's temp range in 50-60 degrees!!!!!! :WHOA:

The habitat for adults is different from Juveniles keep this in mind...Also Nativelover have you kept Sturgeon before?????

I suspect not, so I'd suggest stopping now in giving advice about them..Give advice on these fish only if you have the right to do so through experience.

Redtail..I'm BTW pretty shocked that the fish lived given the condition of it in those pics..Kudos on that feat man as that is a rare one to reverse..Do you have some updated shots? I'd be interested in seeing them. Sorry for the total negative view in the previous post by myself but typically a fish in that condition does not pull out and is guaranteed dead..Nice job to pull it from the dead like that..

Ummmmmm....Tropical?????!!!!

This fish is cold-water ONLY!!!:irked: .

Even at a variant of 64-70 degrees, this fish will not make it. Never keep a sturgeon in aquaria. It took me 1 day to realize that, literally. I am not trying to be mean, but sturgeon are awesome fish but simply do not do well in aquaria. They are cold-water species, do not recover well when underfed (as such and not due to neglect, but nature itself). If you know anyone with a pond, give it or sell it to them immediately for the fish's well being (if it is not already too late).
Case is in point : I will be surprised if that fish is not dead in 2 weeks.
Respectfully as allways.

and he/she is right

I once again will say never expect good information about Sturgeon coming from a forum..It ain't going to happen...These people have no idea what they are talking about...It is pointless to get advice from people that have no clue what they are speaking about. I specialize in them so have a bit more of a clue but there really is little reason for me to correct mistakes anymore..Figure it out yourself or lose the fish...These are fish that should not be kept by anyone asking questions..If you have a question you do not need one nor should you have one.

actually i have kept them. had 3 in big breeding pens at the delta. was great!

the young where released into the delta where it had 20% salinity and after 2weeks they would enter into water with 50-60%. (each was equiped with a radio transmitter the size of those small carotts. ran off of lithium watch batteries and would come undone when the fish swam into saltwater (wich in this case the brackish water was enough to eat away the attachment cable)

so yes...it does need salt! and cooler water.

we fed our guys ghost shrimp, grass shrimp, krill, and shad (when they reached 8-9" they got baby shad)

i dont work, volunteer there anymore because the place went under duetolack of funding...

just because i gave vague answers and agreed moslty is because i didnt have time to do a write-up. and basicly its all been covered...just piece all the info together and you've got it.
