My bichir collection ... LOAD WARNING

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello,

today i had done a bigger cleaning session in my tanks ... partial water change, cutting plants etc.
In one of my tanks i had not done anything for more than 4(!!!) months - my senegalus were breeding again and again, i won't disturb and hoped, one larvae may survive in the underwater jungle ... hmmm ... no chance.
So there's some more light in the tank and the opportunity to see the fish - first some pics of my "cichlidkiller" ornate:

very nice updates and pics Uwe! i especially like the teugelsi! the ornate is growing nicely too. Did you try to remove some of the eggs or fry?

Hi Inf!

I wanted to rescue some of the eggs - but the sen family wasn't alone ... ornate, weeksi, snakehead, all of them LOVE eggs!
The sens did it the right way - they positioned above the jungle roots of my big Anubias in the tank (see this "jungle" behind the ornate on the following pic) ... a good place to survive, nearly the best.

My ornate seems to be sentenced to death when i "rescued" him from a DIY store (some parallels to Wal?) and i'm glad about the fact he survived and is enourmous growing - better to see on a full-body-shot:

The following pics are showing this ornate shortly after "rescued" and on the way back to life and in a similar position today - ornates are growing wonders ...

Hi Polish,

you asked about tank shots - here's one of my tank standing in my office ...

The other tank (where ornate, sens, weeksi and snakehead are living) is a bit difficult to photograph - daylight and tanklight are making a weird alliance. So i have to wait ...

Greetings

Uwe

i know i said this before, but i just have to say it again! Uwe, you have beautiful set up!! Do you add fertilizer/CO2 etc to the tank to keep the plants happy? how many watts of lighting do you have? Are those low-light plants? i know anubias are...not sure about the others.

what are those big plants (on the left and toward the right)? they look like sword plant or huge java fern or ??

Hi Inf!

I do not use any fertilizers or anything else - the metabolism of my predators is a garantee for rich plant-growing.
In the tank you're asking for are following plants:
2 Anubias,
several Echinodorus (this might be those sword plants ... the similar word-by-word translation in German)
and some Java farn

... these plants do not need so much light and are robust and insensible. The Echinodorus is making several scions that can be planted in the ground or can be leaved where they are ...

The Light:
2 36W lightning tubes (one with a more yellowish spectrum, one with a more redish spectrum ... but both especially for good aquatic plant growing).

For my opinion you do not need fertilizers if you are keeping predators like bichirs or snakeheads. The metabolism ...

Greetings

Uwe

Hi,

i've forgotten something ...
The badest thing that can happen in a planted tank is a snail invasion!

I was soo proud of my plants - but then these snails were there (where did they came from? I really don't know!) and had chosen one of my tanks as a very big and long dessert ...
There are some fish that really love to eat snails but most of them are problematic - oddballs to name one ...
I'm searching for a lung - especially a SAL - not only to kill these snails. They are much more friendly to their tankmates as WALs. In the town nearby (Karlsruhe) there is a petshop that offers a lungfish (35cm / 13,8 inches), a member from a german forum said it's a SAL, the dealer said it's a WAL (he deals normally with reptiles, snakes and frogs).
A bit risky to buy if it's a WAL - or do anyone of you have other experiences?

OK - i'd took some more pics today ... here's my Weeksi:
