For those of you tuning in expecting a biology lesson, sorry to disappoint you! Lol.

What are these, see picture below?

Some time ago I recognised that they could be used in my sump as a bit of extra surface area for BB. They come individually and take some time to collect, about 12 months worth here!

They are sealed black Polypropylene hollow balls. My plan is to collect a few more, give them a real good roughing up with very coarse sandpaper and just drop them in my sump. I may drill a hole in the odd one so they just sit under the surface rather than directly on top of the surface as they would now.

They are that obscure I will be extremely surprised if any one guesses correctly. I'm pretty sure what i'm doing with these is a first!!

So come on, guess away.

Are these from your recycling scavenging?

They sorta look like industrial use media balls for air pollution scrubbers or similar equipment.

What do I win if I guessed correctly?

No they're not from work. Believe it or not they're everyday household items!! Your guess is quite wide of the mark.

The winner will receive a signed photo of my balls! Lol.

They look like they balls that they put in water reservoirs in hot states to slow down evaporation. I think they’re called shade balls

Toilet valve floats?

...although...if you have re-built your toilet more than a dozen times in just 12 months...wow...

Biology lesson lol!

Well it does not appear to be a common item in my household.

I can only say that your balls appear to be smaller, and much more numerous, than what I understand has been typical throughout recorded history.

This may prove a problem were you ever called upon to give testimony. Fortunately it hasn’t been much of a problem in the current age.

No one's even close yet. A clue for you which will totally give it away. This ball is PART of an everyday product, typically from your bathroom.

I say everyday product, but who knows, some of you may prefer to smell funky instead!!!

How much does a guy I have to stink to collect that many deodorant rollers?

DING, DING, DING, DING. We have a winner in Yosemite Sam! I'm so glad you won Ulu Ulu , just so I could get that gag in, lol.

Yes, they are the balls from underarm deodorants. Just prize them out with a knife. They need to be soaked in very hot water and rinsed thoroughly, several times, to ensure any residual chemicals have been removed.

And no, I'm not that smelly that I can amass dozens of these in the space of a few weeks, you have to play the long game collecting these, lol.

But haven't they just got potential in the hobby regarding extra sump media. You could leave them as they are so they're extremely buoyant, or drill and fill them with sand, and reseal the hole, so you have some that sink. I think they'd be great mixed in with K1 for example in a moving bed.

Being in plastics recycling, I could really do with a wagon coming in on Monday with a few million of these on, lol.
