My captive bred Altum's

I agree Ryan. those beautiful bars on wild altums are what draws them to most people. if these tank bred fish keep the bars as they are, then they are just long finned angels. I'm sure they will be awesome adults, but they just don't turn me on like the wilds.

Mine dont have broken bars. When I feed them they get dark and color up. Just wondering as they get older if they will be colored up more of the time.

Hi I bought 6 of these fish about 2 wks. ago. So far very impressed with there growth. The bars are not broken as of yet. I hope the bars stay full as I agree it is a strong point of the altum. I am hoping that they keep good finage and get large. I wanted some lg. angels for my 150 tall, planted tank. I had tried altums from many dealers but never had good luck, I thought I would give these a try. Thanks Ed

One of our sponsors at SimplyDiscus is putting together an F1 altum pre-order. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post about that here, but if you're a member at Simply, you may want to check it out if you're interested. Deposits are required this week and the order should be in a few weeks from now. I'm hoping Kraig can meet the minimum order so I can try these out for myself.

yeah i saw the thread over at simply discus about kraig gettng a shipment from tony but must meet 1000 pieces. heres my opinioin on these so called captive bred altums. they may be spawn naturally. but in my opinion both parents are not true altums. based on the looks of the babies. my guess is that one is true altum and the other is a domestic. why? because if they're indeed both true altums the babies would look exactly like the regular altums we see that are wild caught. the OP captive bred altums might be better quality than the video i have previously posed in this thread. i think because they ones he got was selective as the ones in the vid wasnt. also one dead giveaway is the bars of these captive bred altums. they may not have broken bars as the ones in the video. but if you noticed, there bars dont fully go down to there bodies. meaning the bars kinda stops or gets small towards the bottom unlike true altums. and also they lack the brownish bar in between. but the shape of them looks like the shape of true altums. and it seems like they lack the colors of true altums.

with that being said, they are still pretty nice "altums". this might be the closest thing to altums for those who cant keep them alive. but its what makes altums amazing. fragile but amazing and rewarding if your able to keep them alive. i kinda like to keep them this way. but still they are nowhere near as nice as true altums.

John Nicholson brought up a good point at Simply -- domestic silver angels' bars are affected by light during the fry/juvenile stages. Other angel breeders will back this up. The amount of light you keep on the fry will sometimes impact how intense the bars develop. I'm starting to wonder if it's more environmental than anything else.

My big question is, can altums actually interbreed with other species of angelfish? Even with all the hobbyists who keep altums with domestic scalare, I've still never heard of reports that the altums spawned with scalare, so even a cross would be quite a feat.

At any rate, as skeptical as I've been, I have decided to try a half-dozen. Even if they aren't pure altum, they definitely are very different from pure scalare, and probably with the added bonus of being much healthier and stronger than wilds of the former.

IP Discus (the breeder of the fish) posted a bunch of pictures on the first page of this thread, including adults. The bars actually look pretty good to me, compared to the ones from previous pictures and video that were posted from other sources:

from what i read, altums can interbreed with other angels in the wild. but not as often. i've seen some angels that looks almost exactly like altums but the shape was off. heres a pic a member that also pointed out the bars and showed a picture. and heres a pic of my young altum for comparison. my altum is still very young.

see the difference?

^ Yep. It does appear to be more complete than some of the supposed F2s I've seen in videos... their second bar (not the one through the eye, but the next one back) only goes halfway down the body to about the pectoral fin, then stops. So these appear a bit better than those. Also, if you look at the pictures of the larger F1s that were posted on Simply, a lot of the bars go all the way, so it appears that it only stops short on some fish. A cull? Not sure. In discus you often get fused bars or Y-shaped bars -- some breeders cull for it, others don't mind it. I guess it's a personal preference. But it doesn't appear to happen on every fish based on the pics.

I've looked at so many wild altum pictures online since I heard about these tank-bred fish until my eyes crossed.

The group order mentioned in this thread over at Simply Discus is going on. Need to get in your order through by the 28th. I am anxiously awaiting my box of F1 altums. I will be curious to see how they do and mature. The older F1 fish shown in the thread on SD, the bands are filled in much more and IMO look like full altums.
