Yes sir, depending on how big the bucket your using and how much media your using is were u want the water level you want it were half the media is wet and half is dry for the bottom u just extend the pvc up the bucket until u get your desired depth and for the side you just install the overflow were you want your water level, simple easy stuff

Have either of you had problems w/ clogged return lines?

Maybe a ball-float in the bucket could shut off the power if the bucket filled to much?

Just pull one from a near by toilet (JK that may hurt the fish).
