My Chichlids fish tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I understand the affinity for your fish. But you are going to kill them if you don’t make some major changes.
have you tested your nitrates yet?
How often are you changing water and how much?

I know but these are my kids :)
I try to make them as comfortable as possible :)
I'm sorry to sound like an Ahole but if these are your kids wouldn't you want to make sure that they have the proper amount of space to be happy and healthy? If you had/have the same amount of kids crammed into a bathroom with no escape from eachother do you think they would be happy living out there entire lives there? Also most of these fish you have can live upwards of 15-20 years each. Oscars will also continue to grow till they die some of them get truely massive.

I'm assuming you are not going to take any of the well intentioned advice given here from very experienced fish keepers so I'll give you advice with a twist. It doesn't appear that your are inclined to upgrade or lower your stocking levels so in an effort to give your fish the best chance possible given the conditions they are in I'll advise the following:

Get a testing kit and test your aquarium every few days for a week or two and conduct larger water changes. Try to determine how much your nitrates raise between water changes using your test kit. This will give you an idea on how often and how much water you should be changing.

Feed your fish less, we typically feed too much as is. This should give you a bit more time between water changes, and if you switch to a high quality pellet instead of feeding live/frozen fish your fish may also produce less waste. A high quality pellet will allow you too feed less also. Less input equals less output.

Lastly, try to get your hands on the common house plant that goes by the name "pothos" and hang it's roots in the water. This plant you should help absorb some of the waste your fish produce. I would assume pothos will thrive in your tank. Remember it's not an aquatic plant, so only hang the roots in the water.

Good luck.

If it were me I would rehome the rest of the fish and keep that male Cuban to grow out. He has some good potential and unfortunately if you keep all these fish in that tank and don’t follow any of FIU Panther FIU Panther ’s advice the fishes good health and life span will be greatly shortened.

FIU Panther:

I will try to follow most of what is written.

I Feeding them every other day.

I will also buy Fluval ProVac for daily gravel cleaning. I feed them with frozen fish and with Tropical Cichlid Carnivore Medium Pellet.

Is this "pothos"? (url from my local store)

Is latin name: EPIPREMNUM AUREUM MS?

Yes that is pothos

For any newbies that see this thread, this is exactly how not, I repeat Not to keep cichlids. No excuse for such awful husbandry of living things.
This is the reason some groups, like PETA. want to close in on the hobby. The live and let live brigade also contribute. If someone is doing wrong, tell them. If they proceed any way, well we tried.
Most of the fish in the ops thread will suffer horribly. There is no excuse, research is easy and if its ignored then its just plain selfishness.
