just did a 50% water change sucked up pretty much all of the left over food hopfully that was the caus

While reading your thread i was thinking that its possible you were overfeeding and leaving the uneaten food in the tank. You should never have left over food in your tank its always best to wait ten minutes and then remove whatever is left over. When you leave food in the tank over time it is cause ammonia spikes and mess up your water parameters. Even the slightest trace of ammonia can be deadly to fish. Your fish are very small and will be more fragile. Only feed your fish as much as they will take in 30 seconds.

yea i think i was over feeding abit its abit hard to scoop up crushed flakes soo now im using some really small ciichlid pelets

what i do with my babies is feed them little by little, only adding a little more when they have completely consumed all of the last portion. also breaking the flakes up in to tiny pieces allows them to eat it better and allows the filter to remove it easier.

Are there bubbles in the sand? That's potentially anaerobic gas.
If you use sand as a substrate, you have to periodically stir it, especially if it is a deep layer. It's a good idea to turn over the sand when you do a water change.

This is the reason I abandoned using sand in my african tanks.. it's extra maintenance.

If there's food still left in the tank about 10 min after you feed, you are feeding too much.. Maybe that's obvious, but you mentioned the filter sucking up uneaten food..
