my cincta bred!!!

IL take measurements for you this weekend.

They just bred agaIn!

Just did a wc last night and this morning they had more eggs.

The eggs all dissappeared without hatching. I'm doing something wrong here. I'll have to get a breeding cave to see if they will breed in those and remove the cave for a separate hatching tank.

pH of my water comes down to just between 6.5 and 7 in my tank. I have a good amount of wood so the longer I go between water changes the more acidic it gets. I noticed they spawned both times during a storm so I believe barometric pressure triggers spawning. This last spawn, as rain was approaching, I did a wc and a day later, eggs. However, prior to the storm, the pair got uber aggressive and did a lot of digging g so it may be a spurious correlation.

My temp is constant at 81 degrees. Fish are fed a mixture of massivore, nls, omega 1 cichlid floating pellets, fd krill, market shrimp, and earthworms. Fed 5 days a week.

I run lots of filtrations. 2 fx5's, and 1 rena xp3 hooked up to a 36 watt uv sterilizer On about 180 gallons of water.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Great thread and accomplishment, I'm sorry I missed this thread for so long. As far as doing something wrong I wouldn't worry, pairs often times need a couple of practice runs before getting it right. I can't wait to see more as you progress and you get yourself some fry.

I'd try and move out tankmates especially those that are big and can hold their own like the oscars. That's the main issue I think.

I don't think ph is much of an issue since yours sounds in the 6s although lower is better

I know you feed 5 days a week but try and keep them slimmer maybe, since fat pikes don't breed well.

You might also want to add a bit of copper, I hear copper can help protect eggs from fungus.

Good luck on the next spawn. Wayne leibel also noted a correlation with them spawning prior to storms so barometric pressure may play a role in spawing triggers. Good luck send me some fry when u get some man

I also read some where about the ph having to be in the low 6 range with soft water to hatch the eggs. It's trial and error but. I think it's amazing that you are just using regular tap water and getting results.

I think it is hardness. I have read that higher ph makes the outer casing of the egg too thick preventing fertilization. I will be watching to see how things turn out. Great job.
