I think that I'm starting too many question threads so I want to make this my only one...

My first question:
Should I take out the sponge cartridge from my two HOBs and fill them up completely with bio rings? Or should I keep the sponges for mechanical filtration?

And should I bury my bio balls under the substrate? Or will this be inefficient?

And also, will a refugium of 5 gallons be a waste of time for a 10 gal tank?

keep the sponge in the HOB's. they wont do your tank no harm.

i think bio balls normally end up producing exessive nitrate if not cleaned properly. buried under the sand im not sure. id just do a deep sand bed instead. although you probably have one for your mantis anyway...

a 5 gal refugium on a 10 gal would be great. not only would you gain another 5 gal of water (making the aquarium more stable), there will be pleanty of space for all the micro-organisms to thrive. or fill half with live rock and have the other half as a refugium.

i like how you made two of these threads ;)

what do the bio rings (and im guessing a brother product bio balls) do? im looking at aquariums and i see some on craigslist that offer 100 gallons or 50 gallons of bio balls.

it's bio media

a place for nitrifying bacteria to grow and convert ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate

Okay. Settled then. Thanks!
Oh yeah but how would I clean them?
And aren't nitrate factories good because nitrate is the final (an least harmful) nitrogen compound?

Dang beat me to it...

New Question.
I hate my two clownfish. How can I trap them (capture them) so I can kill (or give them) away??

Seriously, if I can get them outta my tank, I'm going to cut the first one in half, cover the wound in tar and burn the rest.

Then I'm going to poke the other one's eyes and then file off it's scales with a file and then smash it and feed all the leftovers to my Pacman frog.

:(

People hate mantis shrimps so much...my clowns keep stealing the food (de-shelled hermits, smashed snails, blackworms) right out of my tongs as I'm feeding them to my mantis...instead of killing the mantis I'mma kill my clownfish...such pests.

And they don't even eat the corpses they steal, they just drop them behind the LR and I have a bad time trying to retrieve them...

Why don't you send me the clowns instead..? I could really use some new SW fish...

The pair cost $3...I live in Asia...you still sure you want them?? :D

Anyway, another question also...

I wanna do a custom refugium, which I might build myself or get someone to make. If I do it myself I will get a piece of acrylic and line bend it into a triangle (that's what fits the space I have) and seal the remaining side with silicone or something...and attach a base with the same. The I want to add a bubble trap, skimmer, macroalgae compartment, live rubble box, overflow switch, bio rings, pod breeder, pump, wet/dry, maybe a DSB and maybe a mangrove compartment. The water will be pumped into the fuge/sump by pump and will return HOB waterfall style. How's this sound?

Damn thats cheap... I would love to...but im in india..and shipping them would be expensive...

I can't find a fish cheaper than 8-10$ (usd) here...
