My Devil Cats

Basically, from the work Matt and I have done and which has been confirmed by Dr. Ng (the guy who recognized that B. rutilus was something different than "yarrelli") seems to indicate that Roberts (1983) was all wrong. There appears to be five, maybe six different species. Matt and I are working on it and hopefully by next spring we'll be able to do a definitive ID thread for these as well.

I guess ill bear with u guys until then...im not a thread hijacker just trying to get it straight myself. Ive seen alot of the "older" imports of goonch in person before i ever owned one and they were nothing at all like these new ones. Wish u 2 were around 8 yrs ago hah

Mine were from wes's batch almost 2 yrs ago, if that helps confirm the i.d and he had to put out a disclaimer due to most dying almost immediatly.....any one from previous years i saw (2006-2009) resemble this species aswell. All this new info and the tai's just recently hit the market which is very odd. Back in the day (2006) only 1 or 2 were available a year and i had to wait 3 yrs for the batch i got. Something is def. Fishy with all this new info outta nowhere aswell as all the new goonch people r importing. Does anyone have a true indian yarelli lol? I find it hard to believe wes sold anything with a mis i.d.

Yours were true Indians. Highland giants just like Jeremy Wade and Jakub Vagner caught, too.

Wes has also recently confirmed that in his experience, there are two varieties of goonch to come out of India as well. One that is the same as your guys, the "highland giants" that I would call B. bagarius and a relatively spot free morph just like the one that I told Matt is Drogon's type. I strongly suspect that this is the "lowland giant", a warm water fish, that I would call B. yarrelli.

The new info isn't really new info. I think that there just hasn't been anyone to really dig off in the info that was already there, which I have been working on actually doing since January. I found that Roberts rolled up a bunch of previously recognized species into one (yarrelli) based on some rather dubious traits. In fact, in his paper, he used an image of what is doubtlessly a rutilus to show yarrelli.

I feel confident in challenging this summary of the genus, even though I don't have the doctorate needed to get it published and recognized by science. :1zhelp:

Thanks for clearing things up for me, makes alot more sense now. Also makes me kick myself in the teeth a bit more to confirm i had some of the best :(. Best of luck to u guys with all of urs :), im auto drippin now and waiting patiently for some more b.bagarius to come around for a second chance.

Dont kick yourself! I lost my old indian and my rutilus. They were both beautiful fish. However I must say Drogon is growing faster than any of the goonches I have ever kept before. Hes already pushing 10.5 inches

First step to addiction is admitting you have a problem, Matt.

Oh I have a huge goonch addiction lmao. Also an update on Drogon. He is offically the fastest growing goonch cat I have ever had. If I had bought an indian at the same time the indian would be at least 2 inches smaller than him at this point (based on my old indian Masamune's growth). This is something I find incredible. He is growing at an alarming rate.
