Any ideas on this one?

Had this fish three years only grew to 8", at a temp of 78, so doubt its B yarelli, sold B bagarius.

Yarrellii or Rutilus?

thats a big bagarius in the above pic.....whose is it? Someone here should adopt or buy it and put it in a pond

Yarrellii or Rutilus?

I'd be inclined to agree that its a rutilus.

Thanks man! And my thai is really yarelli.

Got more pics of the Thai fish? I don't doubt that there's multiple sympatric species of Bagarius in east Asia, some species of which may even be undescribed or incorrectly described. I think my next MFK project / article is about to be underway....

I used an older picture of yours when he was about the same size as Matt's fish in this thread. Your fish has round eyes and is speckled, though not as heavily as Matt's yarelli. Yours also has very indistinct, smudgy black bands as opposed to the sharp line's on Matt's rutilus.

Do you know the collection point of your fish? If its India, that simplifies the matter. If it's a "Thai" strain, then it could be yarelli or more likely, what I call B. bagarius. 8" is the commonly quoted top end for B. bagarius, but that was the size of the holotype. Ng's holotype rutilus was only ten inches IIRC. I have an extremely strong suspicion that B. bagarius reaches sizes similar to rutilus, suchus and yarelli, but isn't properly documented as doing so because it's commonly called "Thai yarelli".

If there really is a strain of Bagarius that never exceeds 8", where are they? I've never seen proof of one, and trust me, I've looked. Bagarius are the reason I got into keeping monsters to begin with many moons ago.

The pic of yours I used:

Yeah thats my baby Goonch. I bought him as a "True Indian Goonch" from Wes of Rare fish about 3 years ago. Wild caught from India is how it was sold. It's over 2 feet now. Of course I don't want to hijack, I just want to add to the discussion and maybe help with some True Indian Goonch photos if that helps.
