but if we had regular water changes wouldnt the ammonia be gone?

If you took the bags of fish, acclimated them and then dumped the entire contents into the tank (bag water and fish) than a huge ammonia spike is very possible. If the fish were in the bags for 3 days, than ammonia was at a very high level to begin with. When you open the bag, the pH in the bag water goes back up which will convert the relatively safe ionized ammonia into deadly un-ionized ammonia which will kill fish. Then if you dumped all this into your tank, it would not only kill your new fish, but also your established discus in that tank.

For such a fast fish kill, it is NOT anything parasitic or bacterial. It is a water quality issue. From what ive read, it sounds like the water in the shipping bags was dumped into the tank along with the fish. The amount of ammonia in the bags might have been enough to kill them. Next time, cut bag open, acclimate and transfer only the fish, discard bag water.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed it is the water quality issue. Thanks for voicing your opinion, Ryan.

So all i need is a Bio-filter to keep the nitrites down? and water changes to keep the nitrates low? what brand of filters should i buy?
