My DIY Fish Trap

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I carved this guy from a cedar branch, and the spoon was from a scrap of acrylic.

For strength, I decided to run stainless leader wire through the body. The lure is going to be destroyed the first time a fish hits it, so I want to make sure I at least get to keep the fish. I wired each hook individually to the split ring.

The two nuts and plug are for the rattle chamber. I drilled the body, dropped the nuts in and plugged the hole. I then contoured the body with wood filler where it needed it.

The paint is a base coat of hunter green with a top coat of metalic gold blended from the bottom.

Here it is with the paint dry and reassembled. The only thing left is to shape the spoon to reduce drag, glue it in, and add eyes.

And once again, the finished product. These things retail for $25 to $30 and we go through them like crazy. I figured I either make some or take out a loan. We are going to eventually target tuna and those plugs cost upwards of fifty bucks :(

I have some real traps in the works, and some soaking. I'll post some of those soon.

:banhim: The amount of toxins released into the atmosphere in the making of this could have killed a 4th world country and all of their fish!!!! :banhim:

Tuna? You got a big S/W tank you haven't told us about? Look out johnptc you got competition.

With all the lakes around you, I thought you'd have a trap in each one...

I thought you would have been out on the river trying to hand catch sturgeons by now (I want to go sooooo bad).

Just do like normal and ignore me (:D) and keep up the good work!

We want to see what these 'traps' catch so hurry up.

Sturgeon? That may explain a weird set of fish bones I saw this morning. Two easy identify'ers were part of a gar and a 14 inch pleco (this one apparently didn't learn to fly). I'll take pictures tomorrow morning.
