I beleive they are strictly for removing the air in the pipes. Just a cheap safety precaution.

And keep the syphon too...I hope rallysman chimes in cause I was thinking of incorperating one of these in my dual standpipe overflow system

You don't need them in a standpipe application. The aqualifters are used only to prevent air lock which really isn't possible when the tank is drilled.

on any HOB overflow there is a chance to get air into the system. The HOB overflows with "U" tubes don't usually have a problem but DIY and CPR overflows can get air from splashing fish or from normal use. Whenever using DIY or CPR overflows an aqualifter is really cheap insurance.
