It's a male. Sounds like he got spoked. Even though he was not shy they can get spooked and will act just as you described. I would put a backround on the tank and some gravel. Maybe a few larger rocks and a log. It would be best if had a litle shelter when he freaks out. Mine stoped getting that way around 12" but would still hide if I came out of nowhere. He dosent really get spoked for more then a seconed these days. I think you will need a upgrade of footprint very soon.
