my Electric Eel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would recommend daily interaction the more the better. I have been shocked many time always very small jolts. I do wear rubber gloves and apron when im servicing the tank. i dont think i would want to be in the tank if my eel could be stressed.
What kind of gloves and apron are you using? Can you please show me a link? Thanks

The gloves are rated 00 i got them from a local 3m distrubtion center. if you can find one that a some kind of store front. Alot of them wont sell to the public so id call around. maybe try other electrical supply companys.

What are you feeding him? He must wolf down a lot.

Awesome fish! I never saw one of these in a tank! Learned a lot from the comments thanks!

When are you planning on upgrading? What is her/his growth rate?
So far goldfish and koi are the most common, Hes really seems to like earthworms. I bought my eel from my local fish store Aqualand in Des Moines Ia. On the upgrading question right now i have him in a 220 thats 6 feet long. i would like a 8 foot 600-900gal but still working on the wife on that one. she wants a new house i want a new tank. I thought about it for some time now and think i might try to contact big public aquarium if/when he out grows before i can i upgrade.

Watch out with the goldfish, koi and rosie reds. They have thiamansise(not spelled right) that destroys vitamin b in tropical fish.

I would recommend feeding him more earth worms. Also maybe setup a spare quarantine tank for the goldfish. You can make sure they're disease free, it will save you trips to the store, and you can feed them quality flakes to get more nutrients in them. But ultimately try to get him on Shrimp, Tilapia Fillets, or Silver Sides. Once this is accomplished you can start to gut load his food. But don't give him away!! A 220 should be fine for a while. They don't need as much room as other fish from what I've seen and heard.

These fish would need more than most I would think. Not only would they get about 5 feet, but it's electrical sense would scope out everything if the tank isn't big enough. Since it knows everything that's going on around it, there isn't a need to move so it will be lazy and boring. That's why I think it would need more tank than most 5 foot fish.

True, most of the ones that I see on YouTube are super lazy but like you said maybe if they had more room they would swim around more.
