Not where I'd like to be, Maryland
She layed eggs today.
I kind of knew it was going to happen shes been digging for days.
I was told that I should get a red devil to put with her for breeding.

So my question is should I do that or get a male FH?

I have a Red Devil but I'm not sure if its male or female.
Can you tell by just looking at them?

If so here are some pics.

I know they aren't awesome pics or anything.
I can take better ones or at least try if need be.

My politically correct answer: Can't tell if you're RD is a male or not. How big is it? Either will probably work for breeding. FHxFH or FHxRD makes not alot of difference. But usually I would try to go FHxFH. As a FHxFH should produce easily identifiable babies since most of normal grade fish will probably be sold to a local fish store.

My real answer: Really just because you're female FH looks like it's showing signs of breeding doesn't mean you need to breed it or should breed it. Not every fish is "worthy" of breeding when it comes to FH's. Some are better off just being kept alone/not bred if it's not a very good grade fish IMO. This is not to say that every FH can't be appreciated, but we should think about genes/what we're putting out in the market when breeding. FH is one of those fish where not every FH is worth the same. And you have to think of where you'll get rid of the fry's to, etc. Just .02.

I realize you are newer to the hobby but it's always been my and several others opinions that with FH's you should be breeding for certain characteristics, using fish that have good traits like fin shape/head size/body width/etc. Not just any two fish that will work. It's all just opinion though but I'll throw it out there for anyone who wants to think about it.

Im not that new to fish.
It's been a hobby of mine for about 6 years.
Just never actually tried breeding or cared to.
There is a LFS that will take them if i even decide to get rid of them.

I understand what you're saying though completely.

Thanks anyway.

I'm not trying to be hard on you at all. So thanks for getting what I'm saying. All I'm saying is sometimes some advice that is given isn't the best. Or not had alot of thought about trickle down issues. You aren't that new to the hobby but admittedly there's always more to learn. I can even admit that.

Yes I know LFS would take fry. Then they'll resell them if lucky as what they are.. If unlucky under some made up sales name.. But really breeding low quality fry you're really only weaking gene pool and not getting the FH hobby moving forward in the right direction. Putting low quality fry out there, then someone else will buy them/breed them, then sell them, etc. Breeding without ethics, or carelessly breeding is one of the reasons so many people look down on hybrids and FH's in the hobby.

Sure your fish is pretty. I've seen it. It's a great looking fish, just saying some are better only admired rather than bred. If it's not a fish selected for special traits valued in a certain FH strain then I'd rather see you breed RDxRD or some other cichlid that has less variances in gene's.

Just something to think about. And for others thinking about breeding just anything x anything to read.

i think if your are that serious in the hobby, then take a shot and breed your flowerhorn. got to start some time. that is the fun part of this hobby. the ability to breed your fish. just cant tell by the pics of your red devil if its male or female. goodluck!

i got some pics of my fh on this forum just check out my handle name and check the pics i posted.
