Balloon mollies have a high mortality rate period. I have been trying to breed some, as the misses love them, but they suffer from "random death syndrome" more than any other fish I have seen.

also they frequently die right before or during the process of giving birth. Similar to english bulldogs, they are not designed for functionality, they are bred for looks. Thats the downside to being an incredibly deformed fish sadly. Not using a breeding net is a good idea for balloon bellies as you want the birth to be as stress free as possible.

Best of luck to you.

Also agree about the ich prone remark. Ich is a sign of other problems, be it stress, bad water parameters, other diseases, wrong temp or fluctuating temps, etc. All fish are "stress prone" which is the leading cause of ich.

The ich could have also been caused by adding too many fish at once, resulting in a small ammonia spike, which is usually all it takes to get ich. It's not a hard disease to catch, it happens, even in tanks running stable for 10+ years with nothing new added, they can still get ich.

The breeder will stress the mothers out, period. I am fully against them. Some hornwort and deco is all you usually need to successfully breed and birth most livebearers.

Since they are already seperated, I would wait until they are big enough to not become lunch, then let them out with the others. If you are putting them in a 2.5G by themselves, you can just let them out now, no danger to them. They can be fed 3-5 times a day. You can feed them just like the other fish, but if you increase the feedings to 3-5 times a day, they will grow quite a bit faster. You will have to up the water changes to make up for it though.

Just so I am clear, what size tanks are we working with here? a 2.5G is way too small for even one adult molly...its heated and filtered right?

the 2.5 has no filter but does have an air tube and was set up with the main tank water and thinking of adding sand to it today. ill be doing daily water changes on the 2.5 and its a hospital tank, had 3 ballons in there with ick now down to 1 female ( had 1 male and 2 females ) the main tank is a 75, i do have a ammonia tester ( made by API, i dont trust the dip testers ) ive never had an ammonia spike on the bigger tank. the 75 us ran by a marineland bio-wheel tidepool 2 and works EXCELLENT! my sig is off on stocking, i have:
4 firemouths * awaiting for a pair )
8 pink cons ( again awaiting for a pair but all females looks like )
2 black cons ( raised from eggs and looks like a male/female )
and 7 mollys ( 5 sailfin lyretail dalmation and 2 silver all females )
and the 4 frys in the 2-way breeder

the sump is for a 200 gallon tank but got a deal on it so i got the sump with the tank.

oh and one female jd. no im waiting for them to become bout 1.5 to 2 inches then im adding them to my tank or selling them and only keep 1 or 2. i really hope my female ballon makes it!!

Ok, well you have been warned. You might get lucky, but you have some nice fish in with some possibly real mean ones. Green terror didn't get its name from being cuddly. :P

ya i learned the hard way with the 2 gts i HAD ( i got rid of ) he would NOT leave my mollys allowed and kept harassing them so maybe thats how my ballons got ich, right now my ballon is swimming one min then on the side the next then out and about and swimming then laying down, hmm hoping she makes itthrought!

well now since my heater is able to run and its running in my sump meaning that the stand will stay warm under the tank ( moister ) can i add my 2.5 down there with the frys in there and raise them that way since i have no heater for my 2.5? ill be doing w/c everyday as i have no filter running on it just a air bubbler
