her tank set up is way out of date, i know this beceause she has stated before she no longer has her ropefish, so who knows what else has changed.
i dont know where the 10 gal idea came from i think is totaly false, made up to make this all seem more serious than it is.
ya the 55 is way to small for an aro, but knowing her she will probably use it as an exuse to get her BF to let her upgrade

and some one mentiond that monst lfs wont accept a returnd are cause its to big
well seeing that he had a 10 and he was only gonna keep it till it was to big for his 10
that means the aro would only get to be about 7-8 inches then he could return it since it was still small

although you seem to know what you are doing, I don't think you can just give it back to your pet shop. if you can, i'd get a nice pond/tank of 250-300Gs for it.
