My first arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am going to call tomorrow and talk **** dont get me wrong its a great looking fish but he is the first small arowana that I have seen and I was sold as soon as I saw him/her. At the pet store the fish was staying up in the corner by the filter and its fins are slightly damaged but hopefully within a few months they will be grown back and okay. How fast do these grow. And right now I have it housed with 2 Sveni ciclids, 2 whiptail plecos, 1 albino bristlenose pleco, 1 farowella, 1 whiptail farowella, 2 other unknown species catfish, 3 bamboo shrimp and 5 fiddler crabs. The 75 gallon tank they are in consistantly is stocked with 1.5-3 dozen guppies, 2-3 dozen ghost shrimp and 1-2 times a day I feed them live blood worms. Also I have 9 varieties of live plants total of around 13-14 groups of plants. 63 lbs of slate rock for cover and 100lbs of dime-nickle size rocks as my base. Current filtration is helped by a penn-plax cascade 700(soon to be upgraded to a FX5 with a custom spray bar). Water circulation is helped out with a Tetra 100 gallon air pump attached to 2 23" bubble bars buried under the rock on the backside of my tank. Is this set up good for now until I get a 125 in the spring then a 200+ next fall/winter?

skip the 120 and go straight for the 200 or bigger

thats my plan but its pricey going that route I really want to build a tank like a 275 or something along those lines. I have a great friend that would be willing to build me a custom stand for the cost of materials he currently builds custom pooltables. I have to do some more research to do the build because im not too much of a handy man..

With a 75 gallon tank at 18" width, you're going to need to upgrade in half a year possibly, maybe 8 months, but you'll be needing a bigger tank pretty soon, and the 120 wont be of any help as it will still be 18" wide. Try going for a 180, with 24" width, it will last you somewhat longer, but eventually you will need to upgrade again. Also, you should get those guppies and ghost shrimp out, they're worth close to nothing nutrition wise. Read up on the feeding sticky at the top of the arowana forum, its got some good info. Feed a more varied diet, its better for all your fish.

Hikari Gold... That's what I'm feeding him.... :) took him almost a week to eat a few pieces, now he loves them... Will take another month or two for him to really chow it down... hehehe good luck!
