My first ATF

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To the current; I, personally, would run about twice what you have. That's just my preference though, he should be fine with what you have.

To pellet train him, I'd start cutting your tilapia chunks into pellet sized pieces and later on dipping them in that really fine powder thats always at the bottom of bags. That way he gets used to eating pellet sized food that tastes like pellets.

Thanks guys! I'll try to get him on pellets ASAP. Any particular type I should try? Right now I have floating carnisticks, massivore and really tiny NLS pellets.

As for the flow, I don't think I'm going to add anymore than it already has right now just cuz the other fish in the tank will probably hate it. My goal is to grow it just big enough so I won't feel its life is in danger in my 40. The 40 has a s***load of flow and once it outgrows that, my 150 has a whole lot as well for the armatus.

Sounds like a plan.

Jumbo Carnisticks are my go-to ATF pellet as well. If you want to get him used to the flavor of them, try dipping your tilapia into the powder that's always in the bottom of the bag. I normally dump my pellets into a tupperware and that lets you get to all the powder. If he's used to the flavor, transitioning may be easier.

I haven't actually tried that yet, but I intend to try it soon to try to get my Billy BACK onto pellets.

I'll give it a try. Right now I'm just worried about how skittish it is. Everytime I approach the tank it freaks out. So it doesn't see the food half the time when I try to feed it.

He'll calm down some over the next couple of weeks as long as nothing traumatic happens in the meantime. I'm excited to see another member with one, not too many posts with GATF pics lately.

Does anyone know the approximate size difference between the carnisticks and the food sticks? I bought mine some 4.5mm NLS floating pellets, and there just a little to big for now. Going to get one more bag of Hikari and let him grow a bit more before trying them again.

Roughly a half inch vs. an inch. Buy the jumbo carnisticks and just break them in half if they're too big, or in thirds if halves are still too big. I raised Max from about 4" when he started taking pellets to 13" on jumbo carnisticks.

Do they recognize their owners like armatus do? I know my 2 use to freak out everytime I approached the tank as well but then they started associating me with food so now whenever they see me, they come to the front expecting food. Is it gonna be the same with my gatf?

Max recognized me and wouldn't spaz if he was hungry, but he never REALLY go over it. After having several specimens of all five species, I find that GATF have the worst personality of the bunch (though it will always vary from fish to fish).

Damn that sucks. I just feel bad cuz he's so active, I feel the 20 is just way too small that one day he'll kill himself from the spazzing. I just want him to get a couple more inches so that he can go in the 40. I'm gonna try dipping his tilapia in the pellets tomorrow and hopefully get him to start eating them. How can I do it without dithers? That tank is too cramped to add anymore fish now
