My first ATF

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Update:
It's become less skittish and some days when it's really hungry, it actually swims to the front waiting for me to drop the food. I still haven't gotten it to take pellets yet but hopefully soon. No noticeable growth yet, which is what I expected and its starting to swim in the current more and more now. I actually took out one of the powerheads since it always stayed in the calm water but bus that it swims in the current, I might add it back in. I'm still contemplatin though just cuz now it knows where to swim if it wants current so it can decide if it wants to swim in it or not. Once I start seeing it constantly in the current, I may add the other back in so that it's not stuck in the same spot all the time.

Having kept this genus for 20 plus years, I really think that the personality varies greatly. It will eventually calm down and become more of a pet for you. Silver scaled fish are just naturally flighty and nervous. The trick is getting it that way with the jaw structure intact. Try putting some suction cupped plants on the side walls of the aquarium. Works pretty well getting the fish to realize that is where its home ends without finding it out with its mouth first. Painting the sides works well also. Boundaries are good for beautiful toothy faces that are so fragile. Hope you have excellent luck with your new missle made of gristle. P.S. They loose their teeth about once a month. They have new ones behind the old ones ready to fold down like a shark. So if the teeth are gone and the gums on the upper and lower jaws are swollen, that's what it is. Do not be alarmed. Will start eating ravenously in a couple of days. Good luck friend.

I think I'm gonna like this new guy.

Haha me too! Haven't seen his name before and everything he's said was spot on. Good idea about the suction cupped plants. Dunno why I didn't think of that. I'm sure the polys would love them as well.

I've tried blocking out the sides and putting plants. It doesn't work very well. The best is still current.

+1.

I've never really talked about it much, but in some of my older pics you can see that I've tried plants along side of the strong current. Current is king, but plants can be a useful addition. :)
