never was able to do one of these, what are the requirements? this is pretty BA

I would say it is all trial and error. I work as an electrician so i have some access to some good lighting. That is all you need. I dont use CO2. Which i could but I dont want to introduce anything I cant control and havent done much research about. I just started with a few plants and they reporduce and grow. I really try to do minimums but with the Discus I pay close attention to the waterchanges. I do 10% or more as often as I can. Probably every other day. This is my first year with them so I am still very scared about messing them up or dwarfing their growth. It is a costly learning curve but I must say everything is going pretty well (knock on wood). Thanks for the comment. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Now I have updated my tanks. My birthday was on 10/3 so my wife took me to the petstore and let me geek out for about an hour.

60G
9 Discus
2 Pitbull plecos
1 Golden algea eaters
4 algea eaters(not sure the name)

40G
19 Neon Tetras
3 Rummy Nose (somethings)
3 Algea eaters (same as the 4 in the 60G)
10 Ghost shrimp

any help is always appreciated. Thanks. Pics below.

Here is 1 of the algea eaters that I cant name. I was told they will eat the algea off the plants. (4 in the 60G and 3 in the 40G)

Until next time.

I see in the Discus tank you have Anacharis. Its a good beginner plant. But that first tank you may have problems. Whats your lighting and substrate type? Are you using any fertilizers or C02?

I see a lot of different plants and I do not know if your tank can support certain ones. You don't want to be wasting your money buying up plants that will only die later. Thats the thing about planted tanks, you have to learn it first or else you throw away lots of money. I learned the hard way like this before. You gotta know your species of plants and whats needed to grow them. For you, I would stick with the easiest of plants. Stuff like anacharis, java fern, java moss, anubias, maybe some wisteria and some cryptocoryne plants.

So my first real problem. I came home to all my algea eaters dead. 2 pitbull plecos, 1 golden algea eater, and 4 ottos. all dead. I went back to the petstore that I bought the ottos from, because prior to them being in the tank everything was ok. They said it is probably worms and it shoudlnt affect the discus, but having over $1000 invested in this tank I do not want to take any chances. I am treating the tank with ParaziPro. We will see how it works. I will keep you posted. I have not put any new algea eaters back in the tank for now.
