My first big amazon catfish: leiarius Marmoratus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't know if anyone is actually seeing these but I will continue to update and record info here. So due to the fact that he is so skittish and getting rather large(almost a foot now!) he had cut himself on the small piece of driftwood he hides under. the wounds were all completely opened and flesh was showing. So I removed everything in the tank and just added one large piece of driftwood I found in a river(obviously I spent a few weeks cleaning it so it is safe). All my other fish really love the extra space but the cat hates it. it is more difficult to hide under so he just pushes it around the tank and digs around it. Because he can't hide as easily he is way more skittish and only feeds at night. I plan on keeping this setup for a little while longer then getting one very large piece of driftwood that goes end-to-end. Also, hopefully as it gets larger it will become less skittish and not need as much hiding in the tank.

New achara Jun 7 13.JPG

Everytime I see one of these guys ( a few times a year but def not frequently) I kick myself in the butt for not picking it up... He looks good!

Nice makes me all jelly lol.

thanks guys! I really appreciate any feedback. @TBTB awesome! keep updating with pics! also, has for as achara's being "non-predatory" I had given the tank a dozen gold fish as treats for the gar, payara, and ck but the achara had came out and hunted down about 4 of them. it was pretty neat to see. @monstermins please get one. i enjoy reading you other threads and seeing you updates. @necro good to see you back man and thanks!!! @chub_by thanks man! I'm hoping he'll just break into it and become used to not being shy. If not though i'll possibly add another large piece of drift wood.

Do you keep him well fed? It could be that he was really hungry and/or the herd instinct. He coud be "special" too :) Just because they are scavengers in the wild, where it is not easy to catch a live meal, in the confines of a tank it all may change. I think if goldfish were a bit larger and had some defense in the form of spines, like e.g. catfish and clown loaches have, they'd last.

he had been fed pellets that morning but had got tilapia about two days before so he was probably pretty hungry. Still cool to see him use his whiskers to hunt.
