My first Channa fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I did think they were not Channa Bleheri. So I Have a pair of Andrao. I understand these were previously named Channa Assam. What is the max adult size if these? I’ve seen different things on the net as some say the Assam will be around 8-9 inches and then the Andrao about 4-6 inches….yet I understand it’s the same Fish just an updated name.

7" is achieved but not by many

Ok thank you for all this info. I have a question regarding my filter sorry if it sounds silly.

I have an internal filter on the tank which is about 5 times the LPH but adjusted the flow to very very low as I am aware they do not like flow.

I’m worried that there is zero water agitation and therefore little oxygen going into the tank. Having always kept African milawi cichlids who love flow at around 10 times the water volume and wave makers etc this seems against everything I’ve ever done.

Will my filter still work effectively even though it’s set to very very low flow?
Should I add an air stone to help agitate the surface or Will the fish be ok? I’m aware they can breath surface air anyway.

thanks

Really? So what will breakdown any ammonia and nitrites if the tank has no filtration?

Beneficial bacteria doesn't just choose to live in the filter,it lives on all submerged surfaces in an aquarium. I got 2 Andrao recently that i bought from someone who bred his wild pair...he said kept his in a 2 feet tank with plants and dirt outdoors and no water changes whatsoever just top off when it gets too low,yet his fish breed every year for him. You would be surprised to see the conditions these fish live in in the wild.

I fully appreciate that beneficial bacteria lives on substrate and rocks etc but not nearly enough compared with the ceramics or sponges on my filter. I think if that was possibly then it would be amazing. So are you running your new Andraos with no filters? You feel confident that you won’t have issues with ammonia and nitrites?

The pump on your filter will get spoilt sooner than its actual life as by reducing flow you're impeding it's functioning.

Channa breathe surface air only, they don't need dissolved oxygen neither surface agitation in their tanks, you can go for a smaller filter to keep some flow of you want it, although I don't think you need anything more than a good sized sponge filter.
