My first discus breeding project!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks like your doing great so far, I've got a pair that spawns on a regular basis but I have yet to get any fry to survive once they become free swimming. I need to get them into there own tank though.

They don't need to feed off the parents, You can feed then baby brine shrimps and micro worms. People artificially raise Discus sometimes.

I'm going to try both methods of raising once I get my 55 gal.

Unless you want low seccuess rates, leave them with thier parents for 1-2 weeks before pulling them out.

They are still with the dad, I caught mom eating some eggs on day two....I didn't want to risk it.....I will leave her with the next batch and hope that she gets it right...They are doing well so far.

Can you get some closer pics...? Would love to see pics of fry with Dad. Good work.

Awesome! Congrats on your success, hope they all make!!! I have considered just owning a few Discus not sure if I have the time just to keep them alive.

Are they really as difficult to raise as people say? I guess just routine water changes and testing parameters.

They are not difficult, they just require more work than most other fish. My show tank gets cleaned about 3-5 times a week....My breeders get partial water changes 5-6 days a week, and the fry tank gets cleaned twice a day!! I will be offering them for sale here in about two or three weeks...They are 1/2 inch already!! They will be about 1/2 the price of a pet shop, but about 200% better quality and a lot hardier!!

Only another experienced discus breeder stands a chance of raising month old fry. Most new discus keepers should only try fish 2-1/2 inches and up. That can take 3-4 months if they are cared for properly. One month old discus are not going to be better or hardier than those of one experienced breeder to another. They are still going to be one month old discus too young to sell.
