My first DIY pvc overflow **PICS**

A wooden sump is a cool idea. Let us know the final tally on making it. Might be worth making them ourselves from now on.

Looks nice what happen if u make the piping a little bigger

More flow..
Cool idea for the sump, being an "all thumbs" carpenter, I went the rubbermaid/sterlite route.
I envy your woodworking skills.
Love to see your rig when it`s all done.

They work like this. This demo and the explanation is in the sticky threads.

Thanks for the link. I saw this and also the stick y thread and videos. Is this setup quiet? Does it make any noise? If the power goes out then will everything start right back up again when the power resumes? What about the return line, should I put some kind of check valve there so if the power goes out it won't drain my tank?

I have a question regarding this setup...do the pipes have to be that long for it to work? could the tubes be half that length and still function the same wiht the same flow rate?

yes you would be able to cut the length as long as the outside length is as long as or longer then the inside length. Also there is no reason why the two couldnt be on the outside of the tank, once the siphion is started it will work either way. This will keep some of the plumbing out of view.

If the vent line is gurguling to loud take a pvc cap and drill a small hole in it then jus place it over the vent line. The cap will cut down on the noies. The small hole will allow the siphion to be broken and thats all you really need from the vent anyway.

how do you manually prime it? ... sucking the hose?

I had in the inlet end to the sump drilled holes of 1/4 inch every 1 inch apart, i taped over them and sucked on the up riser to get it going, then sucked on the air line and it did the trick.
