My first fish rescue

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great job on the rescue,
people like that are just rediculous. Just cause it's a fish they think it's discardable.

UPDATE:

I came home from work and noticed the tank filled with small worms! They're about 2mm long. I took a video of one in hopes of someone identifying it and telling me how to get rid of it.

It's really sad. I'm sure these worms got in the tank on/in the Oscar because I've never had a problem like this before. They seem to have sprung up overnight.

I added a generous amount of aquarium salt in hopes of killing them off, but I really dont know what im doing. I'll post the video soon. Any help or advice would be great.

He is a beauty,, up date him in a few weeks..

Oh how sad :-( I'm so glad you got him.
I got my rescued Oscar just under a year ago. He was 3 yrs old and 6". I just measured him again yesterday when I moved him tank and he's 11". So with good care yours has every chance of growing to his normal size.
Good for you!!

Did you quarantine him or jsut throw him in with your fish?

A fish that comes from nasty conditions could kill your whole tank. Being nice is cool, but you have to be smart

Any HITH problems?
I have never owned an oscar for this reason alone.
That's what I used to think. Until I did lots of research and read one article after another and found out that HITH is almost always caused by high nitrates in Oscar tanks. They're one of the fish (along with Discus) that are sensitive to nitrates and living long term in nitrates over 20 ppm or so will result in HITH in those fish already predisposed to it. Everyone can argue all they want about carbon only causing it. But try keeping nitrates at 10 ppm or less and you'll believe me.
