My first fish room

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok so I will try to continue where I have left off here. I have been working tirelessly to get all this set up and kill as little things as possible. I haven’t posted much because I was waiting to have some good news. Lol sometimes it takes a while.

so the 130g tank is set up with roughly 20g in the sump. Ok 5 rays roughly 7-12” in a 150g set up with media only started about a week ago and a seasoned fx6. I’m sweating bullets at this point when I realized what I have done. These are bloody expensive rays to cycle a tank with. So I am desperately trying to find a bigger tank to run while I am also trying to get everything ready.

I tested my water every single day this month since the addition of the rays. I had a bottle of bacteria in a bottle, which I did not trust but figured I would try it on a long shot that it actually did what it said. Man am I happy I had that. First few days were tense, reading 1 ppm ammonia with rays is not cool. So daily wc running back and forth shutting off the cold water and switching over to hot water because they are both on different hose bibs because I can’t let the temps fluctuate too much, don’t want to stress the rays out.

once I figured out how to get my wc schedule somewhat steady, and the bacteria in a bottle gave me the zero’s on ammonia and nitrite, it was time to do the flooring.

so I have had the floor epoxy for about a month now sitting. Not even registering the product I had was not nearly enough. I asked my paint rep about it and he said it was fine, but with my experience I knew he was wrong, but was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. With everything that has gone wrong so far, I was mentally preparing myself for what will go wrong and working through solutions on how to do it all on a shoe String budget. I haven’t worked in 3 months at this point and have had no money coming in but sapping money out into this crazy project. Which keeps adding up.

I got 1/3 of the way done and realized I needed about 3 more gallons of product for the intended finish I wanted. But since I live in a small town, things are limited and they only had 1 or 5 gal option for me. And the 1 gal more was almost $200 so I had to fudge it. I hate fudging things but it ended up looking more like a marbled finish than a faux water finish that I was intending like a previous project I have done.

here is the previous project I did at the tank manufacturing facility I used to work at back home.

Ok so I mentioned the crappy wc situation right? First I started with water that was so bloody hot it cracked my tank, then I paid a plumber to install a new hose bib off of the cold line. So now I have either way too hot or way too cold of water going into my tank for a wc.

typical solution would be to install a sink in the garage. But I don’t want to waste that precious space that I can possibly have another 2-3’ of footprint on tank space. And I also don’t want to remove all the patio stones in my back yard, dig a 3’x1’x15’ trench to bury a water line. So my easy solution was a water storage container. Ideally I want to get a vertical tower tank that way, once again I can save footprint room for tanks. But on a shoestring still I went to go for ibc totes. When I pull up to the place that had the totes I see exactly the vertical tank I am looking for. So I talk the guy into selling that to me instead. Amazing he gave it to me for theprice I was going to pay for the totes which is roughly 1k less than the tower would typically cost. Only catch is there are no fittings. No problem right? How much can fittings cost?

I go to all the places I think I can get fittings, with no idea what I need, what it looks like or how much. Found a farm outfitter store that had what I thought I needed. So each fitting was $90:WHOA::wall:
i needed 2 so swelled real hard and pulled out the credit card trying to think of how I was going to explain to my wife. At this point I am roughly 3k over the original budget she gave me.

I found a piece of plywood amongst my crate leftovers that was exactly the right size to put under it, and I figure things will be turning around for the good. so I get to the point of testing out if these fittings work, praying for mercy on my soul. Sorry not today Sir, Maybe I will get mercy another day. Not only did it not hold water, it flooded all over the place and I had to pull that brilliant piece of plywood out of there with almost no room to move.I was choked but really happy that my new wet dry vac worked like a charm.

so I went back to the farm store imagining there was something I was missing. As per usual, no one really knows anything about what they are selling there, but after bumbling around i figured out that there was a missing piece that was supposed to go inside the hole to attach the piece I did get. Ok cool they have 1, it’s the wrong size, and I need 2:clap well thank you Amazon at least you guys have what (I think) I need. Delivered at the end of the week- done. Ordered it and realized it’s actually 3 weeks away (2weeks ago). So with that said I still don’t even know if these new parts will work when they arrive next week. I just assume not, so I now have 2 hoses that I run simultaneously to do wc. It makes it faster and less stressful. I tried a splitter, but it didn’t work very well and I didn’t trust it being ray safe.

In my search for tanks, I have realized that I have moved from a place that I literally had to give away 600g worth of tanks to get here. To omg the used 180g tanks start at $1200 and they look like garbage. So I am currently still looking for that hidden gem, someone getting out of the hobby and just need to get rid of their 8x4 ray tank for next to nothing just to get it out of their garage. Lol ( I can dream right?).

I managed to find a 300g tub for a really manageable price. The person I got it from even threw in some glass for a lid and also a piece that I can hopefully fix the other tank. This was an amazing highlight. Now I have lots of glass to practice cutting and drilling holes etc. Good luck bro. Lol

so next challenge how do I get the fx6 to stay in the tub (before I had the glass lid). So I tried using the original clips but they were just a little bit too small, so I tried melting them and it worked. But it was still too flimsy for me. I had a friend who flooded his entire basement when the return to his fx6 fell out of the tub:nilly:

so I came up with a little something to hold it in.

after I got the fx6 running I threw in some “canaries “ to see if the tub was even safe for fish after being outside for so long. Lol 4/6 platies died by next morning.

So I drained everything, bleached the whole set up, let it all dry out then started again from scratch.

it worked the second time around and the platies lived. So I moved on to heating and adding more filtration. A big shout out to fishtankphil fishtankphil for the idea about a tote trickle filter. I had most of what I needed on hand including a pump that pushes 3200gph @4’. I used a whole bunch of bio balls that were originally in the other tanks sump in an intended trickle compartment but ended up being submerged. So I changed it out for the stacked bio blocks and Will have to find more media for there later lol.

I acquired some ID sharks that are possibly stunted to help build up the bio load and I have always wanted them since I was a kid. They add a bit of movement but they don’t seem to eat anything yet. I was hoping they would clean things up a bit with the rays but still not really eating yet. I have been told that they are the worst for fasting long periods after a move.

and this brings me to today- I finally have my females and smallest male in this pond. So far so good. Everyone is eating and well. I still have a few minor adjustments to the trickle filter and whatnot. But everything is functional at a minimum level and I am happy to finally give an update now that there is some good news to end on.

I am not sharing all of this to belly ache, but to hopefully encourage some one else out there who is having hard times in their hobby life to keep going and don’t give up. You are probably closer than you think m, to your next break through.

I just realized that I have more videos than pictures so will have to take some pics of final products tomorrow or something.

So I guess I shouldn’t call this the final product because I am going to be tinkering for some time. But here are some up to date progress shots of my disaster, I mean fish room. Currently I’m up to 600g running and as of recently everyone seems to be doing well, outside of some live bearers that came to me with dropsy.

tons of room for improvement but lots of potential left. And my search for bigger tanks and set ups ensue. I want the 270 to eventually be my small tank, and the 300 to be a sump.

Well it's been a bumpy ride so far for you, I seriously hope that you don't have anymore setbacks. That latest picture above is a far cry from your picture in post #1. It's all coming together a treat now. Nice call on leaving the lights up too, lol.

The only thing you have to worry about now is telling the wife how much over budget you went, I wish you luck with that one, lol.

Haha thanks. Oh she knows, she does all the taxes and book keeping so she sees all the receipts etc.

I don’t do any big spends with out her approval. Lol

now I just need to go make more money so I can move into the next projects.

I cut some glass today to tidy up the edges of the pond lid. It was some good practice for the big game. They are not the prettiest cuts, but I am starting to understand a bit more on how the glass breaks and how to score it better.

the next step is to practice drilling some holes. Then after that I will try to cut a piece to fit inside the 270 panel I broke.

the fittings I ordered from Amazon were supposed to arrive last Thursday and still no where to be found.

Haha the fittings ordered from Amazon arrived :headbang2

but as expected- did not fit inside the tube protruding out of the tank.:wall:

it would be super helpful if the Amazon supplier had the measurements for the inside diameter, but live and learn.

I have been cutting glass tonight. I had a 6’ panel that allowed me to make 2 pieces that would fit inside the 270. Which allowed for one piece to be for practice if needed. Sure enough, I needed to practice.

for all the people out there complaining about how expensive fish tanks are, you need to understand, there is a lot of skill involved in this process. Not everyone can do it. And the thicker the glass is, the harder it is to cut. I totally understand the value of a well built tank, and respect the prices of a well built tank.

I cut my initial piece to fit inside, then before I did any of the technical or hard cuts, or drilled any holes I figured I would try to see if it would fit. I’m really happy I spent the money on suction cups at this point, it would have been impossible to do with out them. I got the piece in but it was super nerve wracking because of how it was touching both panes on each side. Then I had yet another facepalm moment when I realized I had measured incorrectly from inside panel to inside panel, rather than leaving a small gap for caulking to fill in. I managed to wiggle it out of there, with minimal damage. Dang this one was on me entirely. Measure once and cut twice right?..?

what this means is I have to try and cut a piece of 0.5” off of a 12mm glass

which is much more difficult than it sounds. I still have yet to conquer this one but hope to have it figured out by the weekend or sooner ??

I had an audience tonight. This guy is my little buddy, almost like he was cheering me on. He must know this is for his future breeding tank or something lol.

turns out drilling holes aren’t as scary as I thought. Still not very pretty yet, but I got a hole in the glass.
