i finally gave in at my lfs yesterday and decided i was going to get a extremely aggressive huge interactive cichlid that gets teeth and will chase you around the room and eat tons of stuff like quarentined feeders and anything you put in the tank :) (the type live alone 1 fish in a large tank...) I decided to not get a dovii and went with a jaguar.... he/she was completely black in the store but once i brought it home it lightened up... it is only 3-4 inches... it is currently in a medium sized sterlite bin container with a filter and airation of course... just until i get a larger tank setup for it... probably a 65 gallon to start with... (i got one fom craigslist for 40$ but it has no lid or stand so i stil gotta work on it...) but it is currently not eating like a beast.... so since this is my first jaguar, please answer ALL these questions in this form do not post off topic stuff or anything else.... here are the questions:

o since this is my first jaguar, please answer ALL these questions in this form do not post off topic stuff or anything else.... here are the questions:

1. HOW FAST DO THEY GROW

2. ARE BOTH MALES AND FEMALES AGGRESSIVE? (i do not know which i got...)

3. AT WHAT SIZE DO THEY BECOME HUGE VICIOUS EATERS LIKE EVERYONE DEPICTS THEM?

THANKS IN ADVANCED :)

1. both males and females are aggressive , 2. they grow quickly an inch per month is not unusual 3. your jag should be an aggressive eater at the size he is now.

also when do they develop a nice better pattern? mine has little patterns but they are not cool looking yet...

hes probly just stressed out , give him time and his colours will show

yeah.... only had him overnight.... in the bag he was going berzerk! but now he is not eating feeder guppies and not completely berzerk... he is just sitting towards the back.... (nothing is wrong with him he is just not extremely active now...)

1. HOW FAST DO THEY GROW ------> between 8 and 12 inch/year.

2. ARE BOTH MALES AND FEMALES AGGRESSIVE? ------> YES, that's a territorial and aggressive fish.

3. AT WHAT SIZE DO THEY BECOME HUGE VICIOUS EATERS LIKE EVERYONE DEPICTS THEM? -----> This is already the case ;) ..

They develop their adult patterns at around 7-8 inches and make and females can be aggressive or mellow. My 13 male is mellow and isn't what I'd call interactive. Jags in my experience usually aren't the finger chaser amphs usually are.

The will eat don't worry about that :D. Here in Reunion Island, we have a lake which is full of Jaguar Cichlids (problably a reckless man who release them in it...) and people frequently fish them for their aquariums. I remember when i caught two little one with my fishing rod and put them in my tank... In spite of the hook injury, they ate after two days !!
Jaguar are varocious !!!!

And I wouldn't start with feeder guppies. Get him/her on a good pellet first. Feeders should be rarely given. My female jag is 9"+ and very laid back. Gets aggressive when she lays. I haven't feed her feeders in at least six months. It's not something I do often or recommend. At four inches my girl was still very shy but she would come out to eat. I would also get it into the tank ASAP. Let it get settled in.
