My first SALTWATER tank!!!!!

Carbon does de-toxifiy - not sure about Purigen - as far as I know it's traps nitrogenous gas only (Nitrate), skimmer definetly not.

I've had a few Hatians go belly up and a few cucumbers aswell - I do run carbon for 48hrs a week,but up'ed that when I noticed issues, also immediatly discarded the dying animal. I've had no collateral damage. My tanks 210 gal. and matured - his is much smaller and 2 weeks old.

Why doesn't the skimmer do it? Are the particles too small? Or is not meant to catch everything? I mean, I know its not a filter in the traditional sense, but I was under the understanding that its purpose was to remove harmful things from the tank. Is that solely like detritius-ey stuff or will it take more than that?
 
It removes organic compounds before they turn into nitrogenous waste!

So it only takes like leftover food and feces and dead algae - stuff like that? I don't mean to be stubborn here, I just want to understand how it all works, but isn't an animal's poison an organic compound?
 
From everything I've read an anemone nukes a tank by creating an ammonia spike due to the massive bioload and the fact that clean up crew really dont clean them up. And my skimmer went crazy for a few days after the nem died I assume skimming of the internal goo of the nem before it had time to decay into ammonia. I was under the impression that anemones werent toxic. I could e wrong. Any one know what toxic compound they contain? It cant be the nematocysts they can't possibly have that much toxin in them to cause a crash
 
I guess I never would have thought an invert to have a big bioload. Or a bioload at all....I thought all inverts were neutral or better. Huh. Learned something.

I think Purigen only deals with nitrogenous waste & phosphates; my nitrates & phosphates are greatly reduced in the aquariums that use Purigen.
