N. Bichirs cant live with aggressive CA cichlids 99.9% of the time...a red devil or Jag especially. Those fish eat worms in the wild and all a bichir looks like to them is a worm..on top of that, RDs & Jags are 2 of the most aggressive cichlids on earth and will eventually kill a bichir. I speak from experience of trying several times years ago. There is no ideal situation for them to live together either. No "better size" for one or the other.

Heres a senegal "with" a 5 inch jag. Thats what happens. Then they realize they cant swallow it and spit it out dead and ripped to shreds.

Sorry for the quality. Digital cameras werent the best when they first came out.

First, bichirs dont mix well with cichlids, they are better on their own. Besides, there are so many kind of bichirs species you would probably wanna get.
Second, your 220gall is a big tank which could fit a couple more bichirs including a lower jaw species in there, but be sure to look at the sticky before you buy them, considering the maximum size they could get.
Third, in a home tank, a common senegal usually max out in about 30 cm, though they could get bigger in the wild, considering that most of the senegals in the lfs nowadays are captive breed.
So if you wanna start having bichirs in your tank, its best to set up a tank just for them. A single senegal would do just fine for life in a 40 g tank.
Cheers

it may work i've kept bichirs and ropes with aggressive cichlids RD FH texas GT JD jag ect it all depends on ur fish my cichlids never bothered polys except when they laid eggs once other than that they jus fought each other

Currently my bichirs and ropefish are housed with a exCichlasoma bocourti and about 8 silver dollars. The other tankmates were a 20" red tail gourami and a 12" indo dat but I no longer have those ones. The cichlid ignored the bichirs and ropefish all the time, but that was probably because he and the dat stand off against each other.

NO LIVING ANIMAL IS EXPENDABLE!!!! You should treat ALL LIFE as just that LIFE

I bet you say the same thing about all those frozen shrimp, minnows, bloodworms that people feed to their fish ;)

I get what you are saying but lets say the fish do eat him, their really is no difference except the price of the meal

Would be a pity if they tried to eat it and then just left it for dead

ok i get what u say about expandable what i meant was the chances of them being eaten is so minimal i could afford taking the risk, however if the birchirs will end up being eaten by my fish, which i doubt i dont think i should get one

Firstly let me welcome you, regarding the mix, dont worry about your sen eating you fish it will take a very long time before it will get big enough to worry your fish. I personally will mot mix my polys with a aggressive fish like a jag.

I say get rid of the aggressive cichlids and get the bichir... Aquarium life is less stressful when you have big fish that swallow eachother as opposed to ripping eachother apart;)
