In a couple of weeks I'm going to replace my two eheims with a sump converted from a 55 gallon aquarium. Does anyone have any advice for setting it up or keeping it running? I plan on making the sump a wet/dry.

Stephen congrats on getting on the same page with your dad. Sumps are fun. Just try and figure out if the 55 will fit under the stand. I thought it would fit in your stand. I thought i would be able to fit a 55 under my 150. I was barely able to get a 30 gal in there.

A couple of months a go a barely understood sumps the guys in this section got me uo to speed in mo time... really patient group just ask lots of questions

40 gallon sump fits into mine anything bigger won't it's packed under my tank. Make a sump easy for you to clean and maintain. Some have it very complicated but simple goes a long way. You actually don't need need any baffles in the tank depending what kind of media you want to use.

Yup i dont have any baffles either, at first i thought i needed them, but i didnt want to start giving him ideas since im new to this too. Id rather more experienced members give him the low down

I have baffles on mine and a tray and all sorts. If I were to do this again I wouldn't make one baffle for a tray and bio balls area and thats about it. Funny thing is I just bought like 100 pot scrubbies since I had room to add more media. I had plants but ended up dying so tossing those out and just putting media.

Like already said, I'd keep it as simple as possible. I use filter socks, pond matrix for bio-media, no baffles at all.

What size display tank? what flow rate/pumps are you using? How many/what kind of overflow and drains do you have on the tank to drain into the sump? search here for "300 gallon sa/ce", take a look at the build thread of that guy's tank. That's what I used to set up mine. There's a link in my sig to my build thread. I have a video of my sump on youtube I've posted several times here.

I think the sump is a good decision. You may have seen in another thread that Petco is having their $1 pre gallon sale right now so it would be a good idea to grab your tank from there so you can just start with a brand new tank.

As for baffles and options, that will be determined by what you want with your sump. I plan on keeping some plants and critters in mine so I will be using some baffles to create an area for that.

Also, as some others have mentioned, make sure you can get the sump into your stand, if that is where you plan to keep it. Would be a shame for you to get all the building finished and find out it won't fit where you want it.

You may have to drain the tank and take if off the stand to get the sump in.

I remember he mentioned that the sump might be located in a nearby closet or something like that. That would be best of it won't fit under the stand because draining, cleaning out and moving a 200 gallon tank would be a huge pain. If it were me in that position then I would just go with some canister filters instead. Lol

The tank is a 7 x 2 x 2, 200 gallon. Here is the pump that we have: http://www.amazon.com/Little-Giant-...=1459198074&sr=1-1&keywords=little+giant+pump
We were going to drill the tank.
