Make sure that you overkill the size of the drains.... It will only flow down what you pump up so you want it bigger than your pump is rated just in case there is ever a blockage.
I'm not sure. That is why my dad is just making an extension for the top of the tank. The holes will be drilled into it before installing it. I somewhat prefer this method because it adds about 25 gallons to the aquarium.

Stephen i would really get some advice this from other members maybe post some pics and start a seperate thread on the subject. Not sure if your using acrylic or glass to do this but it doesnt sound like it would stand the test of time
