i recently got a Carpintis (Pearlscale) 6"
Carpintis are quite rare in aust (and to get a big one is a + ). I always wanted one so i purchase the guy right away.

However his two sides the scales have peeled and there's patches. the LFS said it wasnt aggression/fight, Carpintis 'often Peel and grow back their scales', it's normal....

is the sales BS-ing me?

Mine got it's ass kicked by a RD, scales were missing and know they have almost completely grown back. He is really thriving since I removed the RD and the Texas now rules the tank.

I have not heard of any cichlid regularly "peeling" scales without the help of an outside source (other fish, decorations, etc.)

With good water he should heal very well, though. Have you added any salt? That may help.

By the way, this thread is just a tease with no pics.

Ive never seen a Texas that wasnt slightly aggressive. Scapes dont "peel" off but they will grow back. This was either from a bad water supply or more likey fishs fighting or a disease. A pictures would certainly help.

yeah post pics! ;) but no cichlid that i know of just "peels" its scales like a bird molting, like previously stated they have some help getting that way (fish fighting, scraping against something sharp or a disease) usually its not anything too serious and should heal fairly quickly

im a little wrried, he hasn't feed since i got him... he still looks healthy, searching for food and all, still very skitsh.

The pictures, one side of him has a big patch of white:

oooh yeah that doesnt look good, def add salt to the tank or pimafix or something to help him heal, looks like he got the bad end of a very rough fight, hopefully its not fungal... but to my inexperienced eye it just looks like scale damage, just keep him as stress free as possible and the water pristine with salt and he should slowly heal GOOD LUCK

ok yeah just saw the damage around his mouth and that is soooo typical of getting in a fight, its right where he would have liplocked with another fish, man that was one mean SOB he got on the wrong side of...

+1 fighting dmg
