oh ok thanks guy, i'll definitely call back the LFS and complain about misleading information...

today i did a 40% w/c and added ~3 teaspoon of cooking salt for 120G....

is this ok portion?

oooh yeah that doesnt look good, def add salt to the tank or pimafix or something to help him heal, looks like he got the bad end of a very rough fight, hopefully its not fungal... but to my inexperienced eye it just looks like scale damage, just keep him as stress free as possible and the water pristine with salt and he should slowly heal GOOD LUCK

ok yeah just saw the damage around his mouth and that is soooo typical of getting in a fight, its right where he would have liplocked with another fish, man that was one mean SOB he got on the wrong side of...

i agree, but could it be fungal also because of the coloration on the dorsal fin in the last picture? never had a fish get beat up and have that white/yellowish spots on the fin.

i would add more (~1tsp per gallon) and honda yeah i didnt really see that before, OP could you take closer pic of fin, so we can see if its possibly fungal or if that is just where discoloration is from new fin growing back in

That discoloration is more than just missing scales. It looks fungal or bacterial or something.
I would also advise against cooking salts. The quality is not as good as salts made for aquariums. Aquarium salt is real cheap too. Preservatives in salt for human consumption cant be good for fish.
I doubt all this damage was done by another fish, unless it was the most aggressive pleco known to man. Treating with better salt would be your best attack against whatever went wrong, plus help him heal. 1TBS per 5 gal is what i have always used and has always working like a charm

yeh i'll get my hands on some Aquarium salt to treat him. you think diluting 1 teaspoon per 5 gallon will effect the tankmates? (i got no plants btw).. i just the the salt forming in the hood and the lights.

cheers guys for your help

i know there are differing views on this but you dont need to go out and buy a bunch of aquarium salt, its more expensive and is the same thing as regular salt they just slap aquarium on the label and charge more, just make sure that whatever salt you use doesnt have iron or yellow prussiate in it. i use the morton brand table salt that you can buy in the big blue box and all it has in it is NaCl and calcium silicate in it as an anti-caking agent (which all salts need to have or you end up with a solid brick of salt)

but yeah its very possible for a fungal infection to have set in on the damage after the fish was attacked so you might want to go with melafix or something because it may need more than just salt to get rid of it (which is why its suggested to add salt to a tank after a fish is damaged to prevent this from happening but obviously your lfs doesnt know what they are doing if they think this is "normal") but if your fish is still acting normal and everything then you should be able to heal him up it will just take time

Hope it recovers. They're great fish, but mine is extremely aggressive. Fighting wouldn't be a surprise if that's what happened.

it's been more than 2 weeks and my Texas still looks in the same condition. His well housed with good water and all.. but isnt truly recovering.

The salt isnt doing much, I might go for medication. was it Melafix ?
