so i picked up a part time job at my lfs, it was only part time because i work full time night shift. well i worked there for about four weeks intill today. i still have yet to be payed. they work on a bi weekly pay system, so i should of gotton a check by now, when i asked about it i was told i would not get a pay check for another two weeks. and i was never told how much i was being paid, every time i asked i was told " i will look into it for you. they didnt want to give me any breaks either, you had to work six hours to get a half hour break. and no breaks were allowed after 6 pm, problem was i was working 3 till close, wich is about 6 and a half hours, but because i came in at three they didnt want to give me a break, and they were trying to get me to work ten hour days. so today i planned on walking out, but right when i was about to walk out the feeder and gold fish order came in, and i couldnt let them sit there the rest of the night, right after i unbagged everything i told them i was going on break, again they didnt want to give it to me, and i just walked home.
man i had to get that off my chest.

That really sucks man.

It's a shame, most small businesses like that are pretty much dicks when it comes to the work itself. I don't know why they couldn't just give you a break though. I've worked with customers and what not before, jobs which demanded a lot more than working at an LFS and I could easily get a break!

Honestly though, you gotta think about yourself when it comes to a job. If they can't even tell you how much you're getting paid per hour then it really isn't worth working there. I know fish are fun but business is business and I probably would've done the same thing.

i figured i was gonna get paid like 7.15, only because thats min. wage, witch i didnt mind cuz i would be working with fish, but the other guys knew i actually enjoyed cleaning filters, scrubbing tanks, etc. so they always slacked off and left all the work for me. thats another reason i quit.

First off, why would you work for someone without knowing how much you are going to get paid? Second, you know that the payment system and you're still not paid after four weeks and you still haven't been adamant about getting your salary??? That was your fault.

Third, You are clearly taking advantage off. The government requires employers to give their employees a 10-15 minute break every two hours (rarely taken though) and a 30 minute break if they work 6 hours. The fact that you haven't been paid for four weeks should have prompted you to walk out after the second week.

You sound like you're a hard worker and I believe that hard workers should be rewarded or at least be given the salary according to their payment scheme may it be weekly, every other week, 15-days, or monthly.

You made the right decision by walking out but you made it after you have clearly been taken advantage off for two weeks (not counting the first two).

NOw its time to go back and get your salary for a month.

WITH OUR ECONOMY TH WAY IT IS TODAY THE JOB MARKET IS REALLLLY SH1TI IF YOU GET SOMETHING GOOD YOU GOTTTA HOLD ON TO THAT AND HONESTLY BOSSES KNOW THAT SO THEY FEEL THEY CAN TREAT YOU HOWEVER CUZ MAYBE YA CANT GET ANYTHING BETTER AND YOUR STUCK THERE

This guy is absolutely right though. I should've mentioned it before, by law you're required to have no less than a 30 minute lunch per shift. =\ Though I commend you for sticking it through for 4 weeks out of your love for the hobby.

Most people would've been gone after only one week, buuut experience is experience.

state law here is 15 minute break after four hours of work. the reason i stayed after i didnt get paid the first two weeks was this.

with that system you work our two weeks, and you dont get paid for those two weeks intill two weeks from then if you know what i mean. so i knew i wouldnt get a paycheck intill the second pay day. wich would be for weeks.

Oh wait, yeah you're right. At most jobs they hold your first pay check and give it to you on the second pay period.

You quit, but mind you they still owe you the money so I might wanna go back there soon if I were you lol.

I'd say screw the pay check and have them give you your four weeks in store credit. Boo ya!!

Thats pretty cool though that you were able to get a job at a LFS. All of the ones around here are too cheap to hire anyone. I'm about ready to go volunteer to work in them cuz they really need to turn their stores around. Its pathetic what those fish have to live through.

Don't burn your bridges though man. Just walking out on the job might be satisfying, but it doesn't 'speak' very good of you. Giving them too weeks notice, stating your reasons for doing so, and being firm about it will not only gain you respect, but it will also make it easier for you to get another job later somewhere else. Build good ethics...the rest is a snap. Plus you might actually snap some sense into them and they might pay you.

BTW...why do you need a break working at a LFS? LoL. Lunch is option where I work...lol...its great.
