my first time being screwed over at my lfs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wow let us know how it goes, id contact the natl labor, bbb, osha and call them (the lfs) and tell them you have an appointment with a lawyer. sorry, but i wouldnt take them jerking me around. you should have been told what your hourly wage was BEFORE you even started working- you signed paperwork, right? hope you got a copy of it all, if not go in there and request a copy. if they refuse tell them the lawyer will get it from them then.

forget the store credit thing. if they werent willing to pay you, what makes you think they will give you a fair shake on that too?

Stop thinking about store credit, your time is more valuable then that.
And stop asking for your pay check.
The LFS owner won't respond either, and will in fact take it as a sign of weekness.

Contact the government agencies everyone here is telling you to, then just call and leave the store a message telling them what you have done.

Either the LFS will cough up the pay check and act like everything is OK and perfectly normal.
Or he won't. If he doesn't then wait to see if the government does the work for you first.

No need for a lawer at this stage.

My guess is you will get your paycheck when everyone else does for the pay period.

As far as breaks go;

The Fail Labor Standards Act in many cases does not apply to small business. They do not have to pay minimum wage, are not required to give breaks for certain hours worked, and are not required to pay overtime.

Only when the employee of the small business is a professional or highly skilled worker is the Small Business not exempt from labor guidelines (like if I owned a law firm with 2 Lawyers and 2 legal assistants)

*ETA* I do own a small business with two employees

Don't burn your bridges though man. Just walking out on the job might be satisfying, but it doesn't 'speak' very good of you. Giving them too weeks notice, stating your reasons for doing so, and being firm about it will not only gain you respect, but it will also make it easier for you to get another job later somewhere else. Build good ethics...the rest is a snap. Plus you might actually snap some sense into them and they might pay you.

No, he did the "right" thing. So are you recommending that he should have given a 2 week's notice so that the LFS would have gotten 6 week's of free labor out of him instead of four? And if he already had a full-time job, he DEFINITELY did the right thing.

Now contact the Better Business Bureau and your local government employment law enforcement agencies and get the ball rolling.

definitely report the place to the relevant authorities, what's to say they haven't done this before and gotten away with slavery with the victim leaving but not reporting and what's to say they won't do the same thing again to someone else?
