you can get more than 10 tiger barbs and a red tailed shark maybe some 3 spot gouramis would look good clown loches would do good in a 40 gal mabey some hybrid blood parrots would be nice

live plants are easy as pie as long as you KNOW what plant you are getting. i have a 75 gallon, no co2, no fertilizer, regular gravel and it is fully planted. that being said all i have is java fern which is indestructable, Anubias, also indestructable, and hornwort, indestructable. and, none of those plants even has to be rooted, so i can gravel vac all day with no ill effects. oh, also some bannana plants too. it looks great, helps with filtration, looks so much nicer than silk plants and really makes things look alive. so if i were you i would get the easy plants, java fern, java moss, anubias, hornwort. im sure there are other super super easy plants but those are what i have. oh, and i literally give them no special care whatsoever, i treat them like plastic plants and they still grow great. ive even totally planted other tanks just from propagation. plants do not have to be hard at all

no.....sorry

clown loaches get way too big for a 40 and gouramis and tiger barbs generally do NOT mix well in smaller tanks. If they don't nip them to death, they will most likely stress them to death.

I don't know much about plants, but Ive kept tiger barbs most of my life. My most successful setup was a 90 with 24 tiger barbs, rainbow shark and an L75. The larger the group of TB's the more their aggression will stay within the group. I would NOT suggest adding 3. Start with at least 5

well I put in 3, they are all by themselves adding 2-3 more probably next week and the RTS (trying to do it in one add) so then there would be 5 TBs and a RTS

Just watch them carefully and add more soon. They are viscous to each other in pairs and trios. Best of luck

On a side note, your rts will most likely start to heard the barbs. I have a rainbow shark that herded my tiger barbs constantly. The shark outlived them all and now herds silver dollars twice his size in my 300. My rainbow shark is probably my most entertaining and active fish.

i have tiger barbs and three spot gouramis in a 30 gallon together my dad used to keep clown loches in a 20 gallon tank well now i now they need more space one of my books said that they got 5 inches

I'd use plastic plants. KISS.

Sharks fight. Just get 1.

Get a large school of tiger barbs. 8-10 will look nice and spread the nippiness...

Finally, get some gravel or filter fluff from a cycled tank and add it to yours. You NEED to cycle the tank (to grow beneficial bacteria). I'd cycle the tank with the barbs. They're tough.

Do a water change after a couple of weeks with the barbs in the tank. Have your LFS test the water. If there's nitrate and no ammonia or nitrIte then, you're cycled and ready to add more fish.

Where in NJ are you? If you're near a local fish club, join and you'll get all the advice / help / fish you'll ever want!

Again, sorry, but clown loaches can reach 12" if provided the right sized aquarium. That particular book is wrong. And just out of curiosity how long have you housed your gouramis with the tigers? Glad to see that it's working out for you, but it's far from the norm.....

here's a 10.5" loach
